A work of art on the wall

In the posting of December 6, it was mentioned that many counterfeit items were offered via Facebook. The Intellectual Property Department is trying to act against this by even closing accounts that offer this. But what about copied paintings?

Apparently, if one indicates that this is not an original canvas by a well-known artist, there is nothing to worry about. It is amazing how cleverly many paintings are created. Almost everything can be copied. Whether it is a painting, a beautiful photo or an object after some time, this is perfectly imitated and painted. With 3 or 4 days, a painting of 30 by 40 centimeters from a photo can be ready here in Pattaya. The costs are from 4000 Baht. But people like to have a little more time to work on an assignment. The painting can be taken rolled up in a tube or framed at an additional cost. It might be an idea to take an original souvenir with you.

It is not known whether one of these artists would not be tempted to paint a canvas and sell it as a "true master", as happened in the past in the Netherlands by the misunderstood Han van Meegeren (Deventer 10 October 1889 - Amsterdam, December 30, 1947). He had a great passion for the Dutch classical painters, but was not allowed to become a painter from home. Moreover, the style and the movement were completely different and it would not be possible to sell. Van Meegeren was also not appreciated by colleagues and critics.

With his “Steps at Emmaus” by Vermeer, he made a perfect forgery, followed by other works. When it came out, this was a sensitive blow to the art world's expertise and Han van Meegeren became world famous for his perfect forgeries. In the present day, his paintings under his own name bring in a lot of money. The film “A real Vermeer” (2016) focuses on Han van Meegeren, starring Jeroen Spitzenberger, Porgy Franssen and Roeland Fernhout, among others.

A painted work on the wall gives a different emotional value than a photo on the wall.

It is of course a matter of taste, but personally I think the paintings are the best you can buy in Thailand. I have paintings of my grandson, a beautiful copy of the girl with a pearl earring, by Warhol from the Marilyn Monroe series, by Van Gogh. The average cost was around 3000 bath, real bargains!

Has to do with copyrights. Most masterpieces are not copyrighted, so they can be copied without any problem.
