Downtown Inn in Chiang Mai demolished
Last March we were startled by alarming reports from Chiang Mai, where at least 7 foreigners mysteriously died, all staying at the Downtown Inn in Chiang mai.
The last I read about it was that there was an unknown virus going around that would affect the heart muscle. It is unknown to me whether there was ever any further investigation after that and what the conclusion might have been.
But there is for this hotels a decision has been made. It may be that the owners no longer saw bread there or that it was imposed from above, but the hotel has since been demolished.
Always sad, but below a video of the demolition makes it a bit better:
As far as I can remember, an employee had sprayed poison on the mattresses against bed bugs. He had made the mistake of using the poison undiluted (not reading the label).
You're going one step too fast. A TV crew from New Zealand, undercover, found traces of that poison in a room there. The conclusion of the TV program was that the poison was probably used too enthusiastically by an employee at the time. Those are the facts. No further evidence has ever been found. The Thai authorities of course deny the poison story.
Knowing Thailand a bit, as well as the fact that no dead hotel guests have been found since this TV program, makes this conclusion indeed the most plausible. I also think that's what happened. However, the case has never been officially resolved.
Completely correct, I also heard this and booked the Amora Tapae last February.
What a beautiful movie. I just don't think that building had done anything wrong. New mattresses and a new name would have been good too. It's full again a year later.
Wow! Those are hard-working Thais…..nice video.
Friends of mine stayed there a few years ago but didn't need the hotel anymore because I have a bigger house with spare rooms ;-)
We were in Changmai in Feb and read in a newspaper that a too high concentration of disinfectant was used to disinfect the mattresses. Whether this was indeed the cause of people dying is indeed the question. They would have inhaled this during the night. It was also quite dark in the evening so I think no one was staying. Anyway I think a big noose for the owner. A hairdresser in the same street told me that Mexican tourists asked her if it was safe would be to stay there. But have booked something else anyway. Too bad because it was quite a nice hotel. But something beautiful will come back for it.
Crazy movie, it seems like large insects eat everything in no time. The hotel now had a bad name. People are afraid, especially of ghosts. It was best to break it off and just start over.
Indeed, it's amazing how much damage those termites can do in a short amount of time. But not a big deal in this case.
Gosh, I also slept there a few years ago, I thought it was cozy and the people were nice, but I'll look for a different hotel next time.
