The 85th birthday of Thailand's King Bhumibol provided impressive images. The hugely popular monarch was cheered on by 200.000 Thais, mostly dressed in yellow. Many held a portrait of the beloved monarch in the air or waved flags.

Thailand's King Bhumibol gave a speech for the first time in ages and appeared in public for a short time.

The monarch has been struggling with ill health for some time and has been permanently hospitalized in Bangkok since September 2009. He rarely appears in public anymore. Bhumibol was crowned king in 1946 and has been popular ever since Thailand.

The birthday king addressed the Thai people from the balcony of his palace and was surrounded by relatives. Queen Sirikit (80) was unable to attend the ceremony due to health problems. Doctors advised her to rest for a while.

The king was congratulated in several speeches by Thailand's Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn, Prime Minister Shinawatra and the commander of the armed forces.

I am absolutely not in favor of a monarchy and also know that it is in Thailand
was poured in with the young spoon, but still. I have the images that were on the TV
broadcast and found it very impressive. All those thousands of people, almost
all in yellow and with flags and pictures in hand. Lots of emotion.

Here in Pattaya this afternoon there was a long parade on Beach Road of schools, government and other organizations. All in yellow and accompanied by school music bands. Nice to see, especially the flag bearers in beautiful Thai robes. Heartwarming how the public, Thai and foreigners, reacted!

@ online Do you mean the royal barge procession? It took place on November 9 on the Chao Phraya River. 51 barges took part. I can't help you, maybe someone else. Also try YouTube. Who knows.

In the afternoon on and around the Sanam Luang attended the festivities until late in the evening where at 18:00 there was loud singing along with the well-known national anthem and at 20:00, after various ceremonies by Yingluck and other dignitaries, everyone lit a candle in honor of the king, which caused a very enchanting spectacle in the dark. Afterwards fireworks and not to be missed the many lanterns that were released.

Previously, my wife and I had only seen it on TV, otherwise I wouldn't have anything to do with brass bands, marching music and the like, but in all honesty I must admit that I wouldn't have wanted to miss it.
