Located in the province of the same name, is the colorful city Khon Kaen is an attractive tourist destination if you are interested in art, culture or history.

The historic center was once famous for silk production and is now a thriving university town. Khon Kaen is also known for its many beautiful temples, such as the royal temple of Wat Phra Mahathat Kaen Makhon, with the 9-storey stupa. Enjoy the beautiful wood carvings and special murals there. On the 9th floor you will find the remains of Buddha and you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city.

However Khon Kaen has more than historical temples. Take your family to the Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum and see how Dinosaurs lived in prehistoric times.

What you should not miss is a visit to Khon Kaen's King Cobra Village.

Khon Kaen has a vibrant nightlife where you can enjoy live music. In short, there is plenty to do in this northern city.

I have lived there for more than ten years and still enjoy every day. You can make a nice walk around Bueng Kaen Nakhon every day and I do that too. I like it and it makes me feel fit.

Indeed very nice walking around the lake Beung Kaen Nakhon and also the Zumba (zen) dance that you can practice in the evening where young and old Thai and farang participate. We were there in 2009 with Songkran really beautiful all those cheese balloons who were released on the lake as well as the rafts, a must is the restaurant on that kind of "pier" pier, can't remember the name, but while you eat you saw all the catfish (plaameauw) frolic at the bottom, will definitely go back too the bathbuses take you there at least during the day .

Next month we leave for Khon Kaen my wife's hometown for 4 weeks. We stay in an apartment in Kanyarat condominium on the lake, top location.
We bought a house in Khon Kaen in a new construction project Pieamsuk, located between the airport and the center. We plan to live there permanently within 2 years. We would like to get in touch with Belgians who live in Khon Kaen, always good to hear the Flemish language and exchange ideas and ask advice from people who have been living there for a while. Currently we still live in Ghent (Belgium). If people in KKC would like to contact us, they can use my email address [email protected]
via LINE or Whatsapp my mobile number is +32 476 30 69 53
or through my wife's facebook Quatacker QC
We hope to receive some responses.
      Greetings Dirk and Chaweewan

My experience is somewhat less. And why a response from 24/9/2018? Is this still current? Is that BBQ still active on Sundays?

Khonkaen is wonderful, there is plenty to do and see in the city, something for everyone. You just need to know your way around. bangsaen 2 is fun and if you like golf there are plenty of (beautiful) courses nearby. The people are friendly . Wonderful to live ..

  3. frans says up

going to live there soon. think it is a relatively safe city. people are very willing and take the time for you. khon kaen certainly has the future for people who want to grow old there. and the air is pretty good.

  4. Louwrens says up

Also important to know is that Khon Kaen has one of the largest universities in the country, annex a large medical center. Almost all patients in Isaan with a real medical problem are being treated in Khon Kaen.

  5. Bangkokian says up

I would like to go there sometime. Is it nice for a week? Which city can I compare it to?

    • Treech says up

Then book your overnight stay at Ban Tulip in Ban Thum (13 km from Khon Kaen). Dutch management.
With swimming pool, fitness and restaurant. Soon we will start with mussel evenings and cheese fondue.

If you do want to go to Khon Kaen, then also visit Roi Et. Not that far away. Also very beautiful and has a very nice inland lake with walkways which looks a bit western. There is also a fairly recent hotel with a beautiful swimming pool between tropical palms and not expensive. You can easily find that hotel if you type “hotels in Khon Kaen” into your computer. it has a large entrance hall that makes it easy to recognize.
Not the old Mai Thai hotel as this is rather tired and doesn't have a pool.

I've been living in this city for 9 years now, and I'm having a great time.
Regularly my walk around the Bueng Kaen Nakhorn lake is always fun and healthy.
Hope to keep it here for a long time.

    Greetings Johan

That of course depends entirely on what your interests are and how well you get along with Thai. A whole week for just that city - just like this article rather exaggerated. And as so often: don't confuse the city with the province of the same name.
Is essentially (in my opinion) not much different, but a bit bigger, than almost every Thai provincial capital. Only HaadYai, ChiangMai and Phuket deviate considerably from this.

What not many people know is that China's relatively new consulate in Khon Kaen is much larger than the entire embassy grounds in Bangkok. It is said that spies are mainly used from here and the activities of the USA that are undertaken from Bangkok (mainly aimed at North Korea) are followed and intercepted.

    • chris says up

The Chinese that you see in the streets of Khon Kaen are not all tourists, but some work there.

      • Jer says up

Explain to me the difference between one Chinese and another. A large part of the shops, small businesses and companies are owned by entrepreneurs with Chinese roots. So like in many places in Thailand. And it is precisely in Khon Kaen that it is further emphasized by the many red lanterns, Chinese characters, statues, temples, food and more.
Sounds like another case of pub gossip to me. 450 km from Bangkok they keep an eye on the US in Bangkok… they are already half way to China to provide the stagecoach with fresh horses.

        • Jer says up

adjustment 2nd sentence: ….be from entrepreneurs with Chinese roots.

  9. Josh M says up

Another year of work then I can also live there, looking forward to it already ….

been living there for 2 years now. sabai sabai. nothing wrong with khon kaen.

  11. HansNL says up

Perhaps too much advertising of the delights of Khon Kaen is not conducive to the well-being of its less fortunate residents.
Tourism makes everything expensive and that's where the shoe pinches.

Khon Kean is city nice city to visit and be amazed ,
live half an hour away between the rice fields.
    and go here for groceries
After twelve years, I went to admire the temple in the photo for the first time last month.
My girlfriend has lived close to the big city all her life,
and it was also the first time for her
that they are all the way up in the temple
    enjoyed beautiful views.
What surprised her most and so did I,
the paintings on the panels, which represent the isaan of the past,
my girlfriend was back in her childhood years.

Really recommended to pay a visit.
What is striking is that Thais are not used to walking stairs,
she had muscle pain for two days

Quite a climb but a nice view. But for the truly historic temples you have to go elsewhere in this beautiful province.

For example (if you can/want to only go to 1, take Wat Chaisi):
      – Wat Chaisi, Sawathi, วัดไชยศรี (just west of town, road 2009, branch off road 23)
      – Wat Sanuan Wari Phatthanaram วัดสนวนวารีพัฒนาราม (south, near the T junction of road 2 with road 23 )
      – Wat Ban Lan, จิตรกรรมฝาผนังวัดบ้านลาน (along road 2301, branch off road 23)
      Normally

See also Tino's previous blogs about Murals of NorthEastern Thailand. Unfortunately, the images no longer work here on TB.

Just a nice province, the first thing I think of when I think of Khon Kaen is good food and swimming on the banks of the Ubolratana reservoir. You usually don't come across a white nose. But I'm biased. My wife was from a village north of the city, so I come there every year to visit my in-laws and see my sweetheart's resting place.

Been 12 years in Khon Kaen nice city and nice for shopping Central plaza.enTuckom.
But before I came here there wasn't much no high flats and no taxis only Tuk Tuk and no Central plaza.
Now a lot of high-rise buildings next to Central Plaza more than 200 Taxies in the city of Khon Kaen is booming you can say.

I have been in Khoan Kaen for 5 weeks last July and August. My Thai friend, an English teacher, lives in Khoan Kaen. I am also a teacher myself, and will retire in 3 school years (pre-retirement).

Khoan Kaen is indeed a friendly and nice city. We did the walk around (or part of) Bueng Kaen Nakhon a few times a week. We regularly stayed in BB hotel opposite Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake. Cross the relatively quiet road, through the gate and you are in the park.
Located a few minutes from BB hotel (walk to the left and two minutes down the road) is my favorite coffee shop, COFFEE LAKEVIEW. I drank my best cappuccinos in all of Thailand here. Delicious homemade cheesecakes and brownies!! Nice jazzy music. The service, especially the young man, is very friendly. It became a bit like my second living room when my girlfriend was at work. Enjoying the cappuccino, a blueberry cheesecake and listening to jazz music, what more could you want!?

Wat Nong Waeng (Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon) is a few minutes' walk from COFFEE LAKEVIEW. Beautiful view indeed. The central hall where Thais are prayed for, and with beautiful murals of Thai daily life, is also worth a visit.

I experienced this with Khoan Kaen. It is not immediately a “wow city” as you might have with Chiang Mai, but along the way you will discover the beautiful and fun things about this city, and you will love it. During my 5 weeks stay here I met a number of Westerners (Dutch, Belgian and a German) and I also visited their homes. They were all very positive about living in KK.

    Greetings from Rob

rob, nice to read your comment. I've lived there for 3 years now. You have to take some time for khon kaen idd. It is very pleasant here (compared to a chiang mai or pattaya). You have to discover the charm. There are no busy beaches and sea, etc. But one thing is certain, you can spend your old age here.

All sounds appealing, but it is now 2020

Can someone tell me if it is easy to get a certificate of life for SVB?
And who in Khon Kaen can confirm your annual income needed for immigration?

And is immigration smooth with regard to extending the annual visa Non imm.OA

Renew passport, where can that be done or travel all the way to Bangkok?

Just a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

    • Caspar says up

      ON question 1 mister L.Lagemaat

1 Can someone say whether it is easy to obtain a certificate of life for SVB?
Yes, there is the SSO especially for Dutch people to obtain a life certificate !!
2 And who in Khon Kaen can confirm your annual income needed for immigration?
Well that's why I'm going to the Austrian consul in Pattaya, stick to a few days of vacation and visit some friends of mine!!!
3 And is immigration flexible in terms of extending annual visa Non imm.OA.
Yes very smoothly come there for years before there was no immigration I then went to Nong Khai great by train 30 baht Ohhh not for visa Run.
4 Renew passport, where can it be done or travel all the way to Bangkok?
Yes, very easy to send a passport, but the last time to the embassy still had to go to family in BKK.
Any further questions Mr. I. Lagemaat I have been living in KK for 14 years and with great pleasure.

      • l.low size says up

Mr. L.Lagemaat is very satisfied with the answer!

        Thank you very much!
        Lodewijk

  16. HansNL says up

You have to go to the SSO for the AOW life certificate.
    For others at the Amphur.
Noteless charges 100 baht or so.

To renew passport to the Embassy in Bangkok, new passport can be sent to you by EMS.
Immigration is very friendly and extremely helpful, if your paperwork is in order you will be gone quickly.
The immigration office is in the bus station, building 2.

Confirmation of annual income can be done by the embassy in Bangkok, to be arranged by post, costs can be paid by enclosed baht or by transfer in the Netherlands to the account of BUZA.
