Pak Khlong Talat, flower market in the heart of Bangkok (video)
There are many markets in Bangkok. The gigantic weekend market, an amulet market, a night market, a stamp market, a fabric market and of course markets with fish, vegetables and fruit. One of the markets that is fun to visit is the Pak Khlong Talat, a flower market in the heart of Bangkok.
flower Market
Pak Khlong Talat means, the market at the mouth of the canal). This market specializes in flowers, fruits and vegetables. It is the flower market in Bangkok. You can find this market on Chak Phet Road, close to the Memorial Bridge. The market is open 24 hours. It is especially busy before dawn, when the boats and trucks arrive with flowers from nearby provinces.
Originally a fish market
The market has a long history. During the reign of Rama I (1782-1809), Talat was a floating market at Pak Khlong. During the reign of Rama V (1868-1910), the market became a fish market. The fish market eventually became what it is today, a flower, fruit and vegetable market. Over the past 60 years, the market has become a household name in Bangkok. The flowers sold at the Talat market come from Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhonen and Samut Songkhram provinces. But there are even flowers from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
Flower garlands
The market is for both consumers and wholesalers and has a wide range of customers. Local florists visit the market in the early morning hours to supply their shops. The Thai earn money by making and selling Phuang Malai (flower garlands) consisting of jasmine and marigold.
Although the market is frequently featured in tourist city guides, you will find few tourists there.

Khaosod had a walk around the flower market last week and so how things are now https://www.facebook.com/KhaosodEnglish/videos/438617947190237/
Earlier that week they also had a tour of the old central station that will soon be largely closed. They do have more trips, a few months ago for example through the slums (khlong teuy). This way you get an interesting and current view of the city. 🙂
