Reader question: What should we definitely see in Thailand?
We are going to Thailand for the first time with our kids aged 18 and 20 at the end of June. Fly to Bangkok and back from Phuket 19 days later. I'm afraid we're overcrowding our schedule. There is so much to see and do!!

Ban on beach parties
The full moon parties on Koh Phangan may continue, but otherwise all beach parties are prohibited for safety reasons, the governor of Surat Thani has ordered. The ban comes more than five weeks after the murder of two British tourists on the holiday island of Koh Tao.

How do we get the faltering tourism to Thailand back on track? This question was the focus of a discussion afternoon at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok.
Koh Tao: Foreign observers are not allowed much
Observers from Myanmar and England are allowed to 'observe' the progress of the Koh Tao murder investigation, but they are not allowed to 'interfere' with it. The police also do not have to keep them informed of every step they take. The diplomats are only allowed to ask for "clarification" if they have questions.
The pursuit of profit and greed threaten tourism
Thailand is the 'Land of Smiles' but does that slogan still hold true as more and more international tourists are scammed, harassed, abused or murdered? The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is not confident about the future of the country's tourism.
Predicted recovery in tourism fails to materialise
The predicted recovery in tourism has not yet started, because in August the number of international arrivals decreased by 11,85 percent compared to the same month last year. The number of tourists from abroad also decreased in the previous two months.

With 26,5 million tourists in 2013, Thailand is in the top 10 most visited countries in the world.
Bangkok dethroned as the best tourist city
After four years at the top of the list of the best world and Asian tourist cities, Bangkok has lost its top spot this year. With the small consolation – that is – that Thailand's capital has remained in third place in the top ten of Asian cities.
