When Thai women start speaking English…. (video)

Thai and the English language, it doesn't seem like a happy combination. Certainly not if you are going to interview someone in a nightclub with a lot of noise in the background. It does lead to a funny conversation, as this video shows.

Most Thais don't excel in the English language, which is strange when you consider that the country is so dependent on tourism. As with some other things, Thais make it easy by having developed their own variant of the English language: Tinglish.

In Tinglish pronunciation, the stress of the word is often moved to the last syllable, and final consonants are often left unpronounced or changed according to Thai pronunciation rules. An r is often changed to an l.

The Johnnie Walker whiskey favored in Thailand is thus pronounced Johnnie Walkeuuuuh.

Many commercials on Thai television also use incorrect English. A well-known example is: Freedom more instead of more freedom by the mobile phone provider AIS.

The video below is a nice example of the sometimes difficult conversation with Thai in and the English language.

Yes, but if the falang speaks Thai, it's the other way around.
Who can perfectly order an egg or chicken.
Who can make it between beautiful and sin.
    And so on.

There will indeed be those who can speak Thai perfectly, but just as well there are many Thai who can speak good English, or Dutch or German, etc.

      That's not a fair comparison!

The Thai language is not a world language, not a tourism language, not a language taught at school outside Thailand, and it is the Westerners who come to Thailand and therefore only have to deal with Thai for a few travel weeks at most (don't talk about expats, but they also stay not eternity).

I take it for granted, but it is true that Thai people are not great language experts.

Then I express myself very mildly, because in all honesty I find their incredibly poor knowledge of English the biggest letdown to the otherwise beautiful country and its wonderful inhabitants...

If you compare that with almost all other countries in that area, well, the Thai people lack talent for other languages...

I'm honest. I lack knowledge of the Thai language. Norwegian European is perfect. The Romance and Slavic languages are also abacadabra for me.
Biggest problem is the alphabet and pitches in Thai. Can't make it Kanumpang.

I have only just watched the video and it is damned very recognizable to hear this kind of bad conversations.

Man man man, I have experienced these dialogues so many times and it irritates me immensely because I want to understand everything properly out of respect for people.

If you are involved in this kind of communication, it will stop immediately!

This girl seems quite intelligent and has an incredibly beautiful face, so I have everything I need to have a nice interaction with her, but I would end the conversation after 30 seconds and call it a day.

Nice video and very realistic. Only that boy is way too serious. I think non-English people understand Tinglish better. And of course he should have said right away that Thai girls are hot.

  4. Gerard says up

This lady is an English teacher with her own youtube channel.
    So it's a hoax.

You can tell by the fact that she actually has no trouble understanding everything this Englishman says.

    • Rob E says up

Must not be a hoax because I also know a few Thai English teachers and they speak just as bad English.

A disco doesn't seem like the optimal place for such an interview, does it?

    Old story
How about following English in a manual from Thailand.
Or the advertisements on the street
On first beach road near Soi 7 to 8 Jomtien, there has been a sign at restaurant “Golden Sand” for years with the following text: LAMP SHOP as a recommendation for their food.

Or if you are at the intersection of Thappraya road with Thepassit road, there has been a sign in the park for years with “Pacific JOMTEIN” in VERY large letters. Laughing every time I pass by there.

Or in the toilets at Palm beach resort hotel (Oh shit buffet there by the way). My wife always loots the tub of steamed crab. (A kilo or two will get it).
” Please put the handkerchief into the basket, reuse after clean” This means the toilet paper. HMM always bring your own in this case.

There at the pool a sign with the inscription: "Watch your children for pool safety". Hmm definitely suffering from destructive guests.

Or this in the manual of a mosquito catcher:
Electron go out mosquito small a night lamp.
    A. The unit fitting be used for bedroom, drawing room, restaurant, inn, work lieu, hennery, stockman, and is it a cut need extinguish mosquito the place.
    B. At not cover a this go out mosquito utensil lamp house the environment in, single plane. Usage effective extinguish strength 16 sq. m.
    C. This go out as save energy mosquito utensil is adornment, hypnotic quiet se ruo light designer so, must eschew lighting's strong light's usage. Usage whether then right direct affect go out mosquito effect, for example sleep front bedroom not open lamp first use go out mosquito utensil, come up to suddenly turn off all lighting's strong light 10-20 minute, or Job, study shi ma bie mosquito utensil set free dark place, all is very effective usage.
    D. Suggest 24 hour continuously usage, try the best decrease fluorescent tube de switch's time, Prolong fluorescent tube de service life.
    E. Be enhance go out mosquito lamp de go out kill strength, should often clean glue mosquito on metl, clean time, first cut power supply open faceplate, use soft brush clean.

Sorry, wanted to add the manual as a photo. This is 100% retyped with no typos. I really can't make a cheese sandwich with this.

Such manuals are usually put through a translation program and then you do indeed get nonsensical texts.

Learning English is already quite a job for many Dutch people, while English and Dutch are quite close to each other. The Netherlands also has its own variant: Dunglish, and many Dutch people also speak English in which their native language is easily recognizable. That's okay too. Laughing about the accent in which some speak English is usually done by other Dutch people; The English only appreciate that we speak their language and take an accent for granted.

Learning English is just as difficult for a Thai as it is for a Dutch person to learn Thai. Where we struggle with incomprehensible pitches, a Thai has to master things such as verb conjugation that are completely incomprehensible to him. Since I've been trying to learn Thai my appreciation for Thai who speak English, no matter how vertinglished, has only grown.

(Question: What do you call someone who speaks only one language?
    Answer: an American.)

    • rori says up

      Italian, Russian, French, know many.

  8. if says up

But if you release a commercial as a mega company (such as AiS) you can have an English native check the texts, right? Even at the airport at customs there are signs with 'No Photo taken'. So amateurish...
Do not believe that there are no official translation agencies where they can simply have texts checked.

  9. Antonio says up

Most Thais speak poor English, but when it comes to speaking English well, there are no really good speaking ones in Asia
In Myanmar it is with sign language….that you have to make clear what you actually mean….and what do you think of a tour guide…who picks out English words….and couldn't pronounce anything good which made the tour even more comical…..example in Zoo ….
This Is a snake...and this is a goat as if we Westerners have never seen that before and don't know what they are...and we looked at each other that she was so proud because she could say it in English...
Laos and Cambodia also the same ……what is ordered on the menu….and get the wrong menu….is just there……and if you say something about it….they look like they hear it in Cologne Thunder…….but stays anyway Disney world…
    Greetings….
