In Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, more than 10 million people live there, yet there are few ambulances.

Because only 1 ambulance is available for every 67.000 citizens, there are volunteers who fill the gap. These voluntary ambulance services have their own ambulances.

Although these types of initiatives used to have a bad reputation, this image is changing. The volunteers have developed into well-organized teams that take pride in their work.

Al Jazeera's Aela Callan reports from Bangkok.

  1. hereinBKK says up

for when the real ambulance is too late, there is also the POH TECK TUNG (I believe founded by a benevolent super-rich Chinese businessman), which scrapes the remains of the street after a serious accident and then to a temple and not a hospital brings. In the past they were often accused of robbing money from the wallet, etc
The Thai press excels at printing the bloodiest photos of aksie-dehn (that's what an accident is called here) on the bottom right of the front page. Also nice when you see another white-blue luxury night bus turned over or hit mid-flanks by a sip-klor= tenwheel truck (with trailer) with driver high on yaba or brown red bull.
