Fortunately, I have hardly experienced it in Thailand, but it is the holiday annoyance number one: laying a towel at the pool.

More than 73 percent of European holidaymakers are annoyed by this, according to research by Zoover.

It happens to many holidaymakers: you arrive at the pool and more than half of the beds and chairs are not used, but are kept occupied with a towel. If the other half is occupied by people, you're done! Actually, the majority of holidaymakers do not want to participate in the phenomenon of 'reserving' a lounger. Many nevertheless conquer a spot in this way, because others do it too. More than 16 percent of European holidaymakers therefore indicate that they 'just participate' because otherwise they would never be able to lie by the pool.

The Dutch exceed the European annoyance average. With 80 percent, the Dutch are immensely annoyed. Especially if people only use the place hours later. Of them, 16 percent only participate in laying the towel because they are afraid that they will miss out otherwise. Only 4 percent say it is the most normal thing in the world.

What is your biggest holiday annoyance?

Video: Arguing about towel

Watch this hilarious video where holidaymakers almost fight each other for a towel on a beach bed:

Annoyances on holiday, enjoy and let people do what they like, live and let live and first look at your own shortcomings.

I hardly come across it, but if it is abundantly clear that no one belongs to that towel who is swimming (no owner of the towel is nearby) then you put such a towel away, don't you? Pathetic hassle to reserve a place hours before and then say to leave after another 30 minutes. Just swim, keep an eye on a few spots, after a few laps there is no owner, go towel. Not very neat, but less aso than demarcating territory. The best thing is just decent behavior: leaving a towel or other things alone when you are actually present around the pool… Fortunately, I see that the most.

We usually stay at the Woodland resort, where the staff resolved everything well, no towels were provided in the morning. If there is no bag on the bed, the towel will be removed. At Best Western they arrived at 7 o'clock in the morning and didn't use it until 2 o'clock. I had the staff remove their own towels and when they started freaking out I referred them to staff.

    Terrible. …..
Me personally if I have that in mind. ..
    Just throw away that towel…
    Still nothing else to do…..
    Everyone should do that….
Just very selfish. ….. reserve your place that way. .. just put the handbook aside…. and take your place. …. Then people come to recover their towels and that way I address those selfish letters on it..... If necessary there is only a fight

I find this video distasteful. The bath watcher should definitely watch this. And who own everything like the umbrellas and hours later bone pigs who don't take anything into account and want to lie in the front row for a penny instead of a dime. In any case, we find ROT boredom that it happens in many hotels and nobody does anything about it.

Very simple. If no one is on it just remove it. First go to the market and then they come to the swimming pool. Yes my hula, just remove it.

What is irked beyond measure are certain individuals at the buffets in resorts and hotels. Who shovel their count as full as possible, and steal the last pieces of roast beef in front of you to stick on top of it. And then four different sauces.
Only to realize that they can't be shocked and just don't like things and ignore them.
You can take a normal portion, and then go back again, right?

Furthermore, there are characters who roam the cafes to tell you their juicy stories. How well they have organized their lives, think they know everything best, have the most beautiful wife and house. But actually don't have any money in their pockets to drink another glass, let alone have their laundry done for 40 THB, around the corner from the youth hostel...

Well, let everyone else in their dignity. Others will also notice something about you.

For me, laying that towel is annoyance number one! And I experience it all over the world, also in all 4-5 star hotels! I always complain about it to the hotel manager, and nothing just happens. No one doing anything about it! I'm too civilized to start a fight, but it annoys me to death. There are people who put their towels down early in the morning and don't show up until 14.00-15.00 pm. Disgraceful!

They're like little kids. Don't go and play.

What I've done a few times, put a fake turd on the edge of the chair, then it's first laugh and then the chair is free.

The Dutch couple from the video are not to be messed with; the man asked the German reporter how long he had been staying at the resort, the reporter replied 'from today', to which the Dutchman said that they had already been there for a week. In other words, get out of here, we're calling the shots here. His wife also made no bones about it, she shouted 'away' as she threw the reporter's towel away. In clumsy and laughable “German” she also told her that no one should touch her things. I often go to small-scale hotels myself and fortunately these kinds of things are much less common there, most people there are usually friendly and civilized to each other. I have experienced it several times in larger hotels in Bangkok that holidaymakers leave their used hotel towel on the lounger when leaving the pool. If there are no other beds available, I simply remove the towel.
But then again, that runs into problems with my Thai partner, who thinks I'm going too far and refuses to take a seat on the lounger. I have now learned my lesson and now have the towel removed by one of the hotel employees. All's well that ends well.

A global solution would be to remove a towel that has not been used for 30 minutes.
Make this clearly known in swimming pool rules that are posted almost everywhere.
But yeah, look at it globally.

It's outrageous how greedy people can be sometimes.

But the hotel owners are the main culprits here. They must clearly indicate that reserving beds is prohibited. Then you prevent these narcissistic practices.

Why should I have to "roll in the towel" with such beautiful beaches and a beautiful ocean within walking distance? Only good for people with some behavioral disorders.
Everyone enjoy your stay in this wonderful country, and leave your pool for a while.
    Didit.

In Bali there was a hotel that had a rule that if the bed was not used for 30 minutes, the towel was removed by the hotel staff.
This measure was already announced when entering the swimming pool. So no discussions.

I too must confess that I was guilty of this. After spending the first days on the beach, because there was no room at the pool due to the towel occupation, it started to irritate me immensely. I thought, 'what they know, I can do too' and the next morning before breakfast I laid my towels on the sunbeds. Then I had a quiet breakfast and when I came back to the pool I had a lounger for me and my wife. We only did one day, because we were disturbed by the screaming and drinking Russians.

I know it's not the right way, lay down the towel, don't tell anyone, but unfortunately you are forced to do it. The wild herd we see in the video is downright ridiculous. What we do not see in the video, however, are the altercations and fights that could arise from this and, in my opinion, there probably were. And what about the small children who are knocked over, with the resulting injuries and crying fits. Perhaps it is an idea for the hotels to hand over a receipt with lounger number at the reception and full is full and therefore no more arguments. Well, maybe at the reception, but that will certainly be a lot less than at the swimming pool.

As for the Dutch couple, they should be ashamed of themselves 'We have been here for a week'. Whether they have built up more rights. A guest is a guest and whether you're there for a day or I don't know how long, it shouldn't make any difference.

Here lies a powerful role for holiday comparison websites.

It would be good if websites such as Zoover and Tripadvisor have a standard statement in their rating whether a ban on putting a towel is "actively" enforced by the hotel itself or not!

That could save a lot of bookings for these hotels.
