Thanks to our fishmonger Pim Hoonhout from Hua Hin, everyone in Thailand can now also enjoy the real quality herring from the Netherlands. Of course we know that the Dutch buddy herring, best known as Hollandse Nieuwe, is the traditional specialty from the Netherlands. Since today, this has even been recognized in Europe.

Herring with the name Hollandse Nieuwe must meet a number of requirements. The traditional Dutch way in which the young herrings are jawed, matured and salted has now been recognized by Brussels. The German name, Holländischer Matjes, now also enjoys European protection.

The European list of traditional specialties has more than 1290 products, including mozzarella and various Belgian beers. Products on the list are 'guaranteed' to be made or composed in a traditional way.

These Dutch products were previously recognized:

  • Opperdoezer round
  • Farmers Leiden with keys
  • Kanterkaas, Kanternagelkaas, Kantercumin cheese
  • North Holland Edam cheese
  • North Holland Gouda
  • Westland Grape
  • Farmer's cheese
  • Edward Holland
  • Gouda Holland
  • caster sugar
  • Dutch goat cheese
  • The Meerlander

Pim has stuck his neck out and now has the result he intended. However, he remains dependent on how the herring is then served to the enthusiast by others. Ever got herring out of the microwave, it was NOT EASY to eat, quickly defrost it, hahahahahaha dickless.

Tomorrow we will eat delicious herring at See Cheese due to Leidens relief. Start around 18.00 pm!

Something is missing from the list. The Zeeland mussels.
As a Dutchman, always with Belgian fries, of course.
The first time in my life I met a mussel man was during my last one
vacation in Isaan. A small village and yet home delivery I was delighted and amazed.
I have never known Jan de musselman, but chang de musselman also has goodies.

Mussels, those huge guys dark green on the outside, but oh so tasty. Almost every market in Hua Hin for sale. Fries you have to make yourself, I think the best of those large Flemish fries.!
      Enjoy your meal.
