American astronaut Reid Wiseman posted the above remarkable photo on Twitter this week. He photographed the Gulf of Thailand from the International Space Station. Bangkok is clearly visible in the image. On the right side of the water you can clearly see a 'mysterious' green light.

Wiseman wondered where the green light on the water came from. In his tweet he writes: #Bangkok is the bright city. The green lights outside the city? Not an idea…

This mystery has now been solved. It concerns dozens of fishing boats that have hundreds of green LED lights to attract plankton. The purpose of this is to catch squid. The squid follow the plankton that is attracted by the light and are easy prey for Thai fishermen.

Indeed, from the beach in front of the intercontinental hotel in hua hin you can see those green lights in the distance on the water. This was then confirmed by the hotel staff as fishing boats fishing for squid.
I am impressed by the large scale that can be seen in the photo…

Here in Khanom I was already aware of this phenomenon, but my guests always ask where that bright green light comes from, it really stands out!

I don't just believe everything that is presented to me. I thought it very unlikely that the green light comes from fishing boats. But behold, I did some research and found the confirmation, albeit in poorly translated Dutch, but still:
