Watching TV online on vacation is very problematic

The Dutch believe it is important to stay up to date with the latest news and current affairs while on holiday. In addition, they especially do not want to miss major sporting events. Staggering streams due to unstable WiFi connections often cause a hitch in the cable.

These are the main conclusions of a survey among more than 1000 Dutch people that was carried out by Peil.nl on behalf of Canal Digitaal.

Good picture and sound are a priority

The Dutch love to watch TV. Good picture and sound are of course a prerequisite for enjoying TV programmes. It is therefore not surprising that this emerged as the most important item in the study. In second place is being able to watch programs back, followed by live events.

Watching TV while on vacation

The survey by Peil.nl also shows that many Dutch people, especially those aged 45+, consider it important to be connected to the Netherlands during their holidays. More than half of all respondents want to be able to follow the news first, followed closely by series and sports programmes. This summer's sporting events are also popular. Reality programs are the least popular.

Unstable WiFi connection

Almost half of the respondents (43%) suffer from stuttering streams due to unstable WiFi connections, 13% even say they have to deal with this very often. Frustration as a result of shaky Wi-Fi is present in all age groups, but young people (18 to 24 year olds) are significantly more affected than older people (76% versus 27%).

It does not state how large the percentage of Dutch people consider watching TV on holiday to be important.
With the designation “Dutch” that number can be anywhere between two and more than a thousand.
But IF you watch TV then, it seems obvious to me that you prefer to do so with a good connection.

It's a mystery to me, to be honest, why canal digital has spent money on this research, unless it's the start of an advertising campaign.

(Internet) TV on holiday? If you watch at all, it's Thai PBS or BBC World, maybe NOS.nl. I managed to see the most important news in an hour and I can do what I came for: vacation, seeing things, seeing people, relaxing (reading).

Only watched an NPO broadcast last holiday about those Thai ladies in that Swedish village, purely and simply because documentaries can no longer be seen after a few weeks. Was messing around with VPN and the connection to the Dutch server was moderate to bad. I don't want to watch TV like that. Yes and a few times in the evening briefly (15, 30 min at the most) watched YouTube, etc., but that works just as well as at home.

So for me: follow the most important news yes, watch TV no.

Must be just me, when I'm on vacation I actually want to watch as little TV as possible. News can also be followed via the internet.
Find those people who really can't go on holiday without TV, a bit like all those guests who go on holiday with the rut and bring their own vegetables and potatoes and so on.

Watching TV is not that important for holidaymakers, but it is for exparts.
Unfortunately, the internet is not stable enough to watch without any problems.
Who knows, it will get better in the future and you will no longer have to use all kinds of illegal providers.

Everyone should be able to choose how to spend their holiday.. so no value judgments about watching TV or bringing potatoes with you... FREEDOM HAPPY!

      Dear Marcel,

They say that, but it used to be so nice to read the newspaper on the beach
      to read.
Just to see what was going on while you yourself were away from it
      this daily misery.

It is not an option for me to read this misery on my holiday that I am in
      escaped for several weeks.

Have a nice holiday but don't worry about me.

      Yours faithfully,

      Erwin

We are spoiled with wanting to be online everywhere, in the days before all mobile devices you were happy if you could watch TV CNN on vacation and preferably CNN Europe. But yes, being always on-line also gave me a lot of pleasure during vacation and for example we were able to follow the illness of a very good friend while we were in a beach hotel in Jordan after a tour of a few weeks.

It's nice that Canal Digital had that sorted out, because it is precisely the Canal Digital app that is 'usually' useless due to the constant malfunctions – a messy app!
In Thailand I usually watch France 24 and prefer Al Jazeera's excellent newscasts, excellent uninterrupted reception on their app and an unmitigated star when it comes to neutrality and impartiality. Something like the BBC with its excellent world service radio, as internet TV the BBC World is also difficult to receive.
Canal Digitaal reportedly blamed Thailand, which is of course nonsense. In many Western countries people think that Thailand is a developing country, while in terms of technology they are usually far ahead of the West! If there is one thing the Thais are very good at, it is the internet: excellent everywhere, much better than, for example, in France, where I also regularly stay. Luckily I have Canal Digitaal with satellite dish there. It is fair to say that in the past twenty years, rain or shine, Canal Digitaal has never been at fault, completely different from their 'free' app, which unfortunately hardly offers decent reception anywhere.

Expats usually have a fixed internet connection anyway. We sometimes watch internet TV in Chiang Mai with 3 different computers.

  10. Jacob says up

How do the expats prefer to watch Champions League or F1, for example?
