Global climate change and rising temperatures are exposing countries in the Southeast Asian region to an increased risk of water, food and insect borne diseases, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns.

Poonam Regional Director for South East Asia warned of this at the 70th meeting of the WHO Regional Committee for South East Asia.

He urges national health authorities to plan for these specific problems. Poonam fears an increase in scrub typhus and dengue (dengue fever).

Scrub typhus is an infectious disease caused by a bacteria. A mild scrub typhus is initially accompanied by fever, headache, muscle pain and swollen lymph nodes. Later, a rash develops. In severe forms of this disease, pneumonia, myocarditis, meningoencephalitis, renal failure, bleeding and diffuse intravascular coagulation may occur.
