Although the number of infections with the new coronavirus Covid-19 in Thailand remains at 35, another Asian country has been hit hard. South Korea has now registered 763 infections, the largest number outside China. In all likelihood, the situation in North Korea is also worrying, but that country is not releasing any information.

The number of deaths from the corona virus has risen sharply in China. In one day, 150 victims were added, the strongest increase since the outbreak began. All but one of the deaths occurred in Hubei province. The death toll in China has risen to 2.592. The number of Chinese infected increased by 409 to 77.150. By far the most infections relate to the city of Hubei.

Other countries where the corona virus is spreading faster than elsewhere are Japan and Iran. The number of deaths in Iran, in relation to the number of infections, is alarming. Eight people have now died in Iran, while 43 infections have been registered.

In Europe, Italy is particularly affected. In northern Italy, the number of infections has risen to more than 150 in a few days. Three people have died. Italy is the first country in Europe where municipalities have been quarantined to prevent the spread of the new corona virus. In the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, a number of towns and villages are completely locked.

News update on the Coronavirus

  • Chinese President Xi Jinping acknowledged on Sunday that the outbreak of the virus has become the country's "biggest public health problem" since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. combat virus outbreak.
  • Bahrain and Kuwait report the first infections with the corona virus. One infection has been detected in Bahrain, three in Kuwait. All four cases concern people who have recently returned from Iran.
  • The US has raised its travel warning for Japan and South Korea to level 2, China retains level 4 (travel ban).
  • England warns against travel to two Korean cities and Italy, the country with the most infections in Europe.
  • In Iran, authorities have ordered the closure of schools, universities and cultural centers in 14 provinces after eight deaths from the virus, the highest toll outside of East Asia.
  • A number of Iran's neighbors have closed their borders with the country because of the new corona virus that is spreading there. Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanistan announced on Sunday that they would do so. Iraq closed its borders with Iran on Thursday.
  • The virus is taking an increasingly heavy toll on the global economy. Many factories in China are closed or limited in operation. Equity markets in Asia fell on Monday following increases in infections in South Korea, developments in Europe and the Middle East. The International Monetary Fund warned on Sunday that the epidemic threatens a "fragile" global economic recovery.

I wonder how many infections there really are. Also here in Thailand I have big doubts. Who controls us? Does everyone with mild flu symptoms go to the doctor? I do not think so. From what I read, someone can be infected without knowing it. How should one determine this? My idea is therefore that the infections are many, many times higher

At the news agency Reuters this morning I saw a map that indicates the number of infections worldwide, including all doubtful cases (pending) in China. Where officially a figure of approximately 75 to 76000, I was shocked by the number of doubtful cases that amounted to 52000. The Chinese government has been claiming for days that corona has reached its peak in China. Strange because with an infection factor of 2 to possibly 4 and the somewhat late response in December, figures should give a completely different picture. I'm not a doomsayer or panic-monger and would love it if the corona were released, but after seeing these numbers I think healthy vigilance can't hurt.

I wonder what will happen when the virus enters Thai prisons.
Some 360.000 people packed tightly together.

I fear we will know when the Thai army appears in the prisons, visits are banned and the prison incinerators begin to produce huge clouds of smoke.

Ruud, it looks like the virus has already reached Chinese prisons. With great openness, although you don't know if this really includes the million Uighurs who are being 're-educated', China reports on the victims in prisons in central and eastern China.

      I found a link: https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/coronavirus-prisons-02212020133223.html

Due to an incubation period of four weeks in which people can already infect others, the virus flies all over the world.

Can someone explain to me that a country like Thailand, which still allowed busloads of people from China, while other countries already took measures to close their borders to people from the risk areas.
The number of infections in Thailand has been at 35 people for some time. It doesn't rise and it doesn't fall.
This is also starting to raise questions internationally. So also with me.
To be sure, I only stocked up on food and drink for 3 weeks, which evoked a somewhat mild reaction from some of my acquaintances, it won't go that fast. I am curious about the reactions of other readers of this blog. Hopefully my acquaintances will be right, that's the best for everyone but yes.......???

Not such a bad idea - stock up on food and drink - just for a period of 3 weeks is not sufficient - incubation period is probably much longer as we know now and a vaccine will be months away. I think it would be better to isolate the elderly and people with a weak immune system…

      • support says up

Great idea, Jan. However, I have 1 question: from what age do you want to isolate older people? 55, 65, 75, 85 years? I'm curious.

And what is your definition of "weak immune system"?

We read this forum carefully because we are going to Thailand for the umpteenth time on March 25. We are not doom thinkers, but after reading all the information we (wife and I) become restless. I personally find all media about the virus rather questionable, not that it is threatening because that has been proven, but I read that they know exactly how many victims there are already per person and country and some countries (fortunately) have no victims at all, weird. I think that apart from personal hygiene and healthy alertness there is little that can be done about it. (I don't believe in face masks after all the messages). We still have a month, but we are keeping a close eye on all the media, but it will be one more thing. One half says you shouldn't look for it and the other half says that the chance that you will be hit by a car is many times greater.

Going to Italy is more dangerous. In other words, it is no longer certain whether Corona is prevalent or not. How many countries provide the correct numbers? How many countries KNOW the correct infections? How many people know they are carriers? Lock yourself at home to make sure you don't get infected. The only thing you can do to reduce the risk; try to avoid crowds and wash your hands frequently. We also hope that you stay healthy

I have also been living here for several years, I also think that Thailand is more silent about the amount of infections here, just not to give the country a bad name. Here in pattaya it was full of chinese, thank god i don't have it yet.

In January I learned from a friend who works in a hospital in Rayong that a man, a woman and their child had been admitted to a hospital in Rayong with Covid19 symptoms. She then spoke openly about it.

Yesterday I met her again and asked if there were any Corona patients in "her" hospital. It was visibly difficult for her to talk about it. After the hesitation, she said that patients now have to be tested first … and that the results of the test are not yet known.
It was a short, somewhat awkward, but telling conversation.
Conclusion: There are no more new Covid19 infections in the absence of test results. TiT

Everyone should give their own twist to what should or should not be believed, but one thing is certain: if someone in Thailand is free and happy with a covid19 infection, he will have at least 5 others in his own circle and environment in no time lit. Those 5 infected people in turn 25 others, they again 125 people, then 625 people, and so on. It seems to me that these people are not noticed!
But suppose this were the case and all those infected people were noticed, and Thailand placed all those people in quarantine, do you really think this fact would go unnoticed? If indeed all those people have been quarantined, then Thailand has complied with all WHO protocols. Why would Thailand want to keep that under wraps? Try to think sensibly, is my advice. What does your question to a nurse and her answer say about what is going on in a hospital in Rayong? You only talk about a Covid-19 infection if the test turned out to be positive. The fact that there are people with complaints does not mean that those complaints are corona-related.

I share information in a comment on this blog. It is based on facts that I was able to establish myself. That raises concerns and questions that I share.

My questions and concerns are also shared by several responders. But what's "unreasonable" about that?

Is it "unclean" because you have a different opinion? Then I think that's a lot more "unintelligible".

Or is it because you have other, better information. It would then be “clean” to share it here.

Finally, I draw your attention to various forms of “creative data management” that are rife with various Thai authorities, including traffic casualties, PM 2.5, educational results and many loans that turn out to be non-existent (unfortunately this is not only the case for FFP) .

In the long run, a reputation gets ahead of you.

Dow Jones has fallen more than 1.000 points (at the time of writing). Finally a reaction in the US stock market - after recent records a day or so ago. There is relatively little mention of the virus here in America because of the elections (and slight panic in left-wing media that Trump is likely to win in November).
