The much fancied UberMOTO of internet company Uber will probably die a soft death now that the Land Transport Department (LTD) has banned UberMOTO and competitor GrabBike.

Both companies offered motorcycle taxis but they use motorcycles registered for private use. After GrabBike advertised on Saturday, the company was called out by the LTD. A conversation with UberMOTO will follow.

Uber started a trial for a motorcycle taxi service at the end of February because of the heavy traffic in Bangkok. A normal taxi service with cars does not work optimally. It is not known whether Uber will cancel this experiment.

The Thai government has already started registering motorcycle taxis in order to put an end to the resale of permits by the mafia. So far, 90.000 motorcycle taxis have registered and 10.000 applications are still pending. The motorcyclists who provide taxi services must be registered with a legal base and have a special driver's license before they receive a permit.
