The Ministry of Health released a statement on Tuesday saying that all foreigners arriving in Thailand must undergo mandatory 14-day quarantine, even if they have been vaccinated.

Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director general of the disease control department, said the Covid-19 vaccines are still new and their effectiveness has not yet been sufficiently established.

He added that it is still too early to determine whether a vaccinated person can be considered safe enough to travel. “Only when the effectiveness of a vaccine is established can the measures be relaxed,” said Opas.

So for all travelers, including Thai, who come from abroad, the quarantine measures remain in force.

  1. Well, then Thailand will hardly receive any tourists in 2021. There will be plenty of other holiday countries that do accept a vaccination certificate.

    • keespattaya says up

Indeed Peter. It remains to be seen which country will open its borders to tourists without quarantine. Hopefully those include Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Then just spend my euros there. I think the Philippines is unfortunately also keeping its borders closed for the time being.

      • Hans says up

Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam also have a quarantine obligation, so you cannot lose your euros there without first taking some obstacles

        • keespattaya says up

Hans I know that these countries also have a quarantine obligation, but hopefully this will disappear if you can show that you have been vaccinated. Emphasis on HOPELY. Otherwise possibly Bali.

    • Oh yeah? Which country in Europe obliges a foreigner to lock himself up in a four or five-star hotel for about 14 baht (€ 50.000) for 1.300 days. Please provide examples or source.

      • EDDY says up

If you have been injected with the vaccine and, if necessary, have another test done for
you leave Then it is a ridiculous situation to first spend 2 weeks in an expensive hotel
        have to stay
Or is it just for the money???

  2. Hans says up

and that is therefore very self-evident because that syringe in the tourist offers no safety for the population here.

  3. Jozef says up

In my opinion, yet another proof that ordinary tourists are no longer welcome in the "land of smiles".
Indeed, no one knows how effective the vaccine will be, although there is talk of 90 to 95%.
And what period will they maintain to decide whether people can still be contagious after vaccination. ??
    One year, two years…..
It is also possible that you travel domestically after the two-week quarantine and become infected there.
This seems like a long-winded process, without perspective even after the hope and joy that arose after the approval of various vaccines.
Too bad, very unfortunate everyone, if the followers are not willing or able to sit out the 15 days in a hotel room, then I fear that 2021 will not bring much more improvement than 2020.
Unfortunately, we will then have to move to other places, we cannot wait forever for a humane way to enter the country.
Unfortunately, this is not a nice New Year's gift.

    Regards, Joseph

Instead of improvement, 2021 may even result in a deterioration compared to 2020. After all, in 2020 Thailand still had at least 2 normal months (January and February) and 1 largely normal month (March) before tourism collapsed.

    • Ruud says up

Jozef, it is true about those 90 to 95%, but it has still not been shown that those people cannot infect unvaccinated people, and since Thailand only starts vaccinating in June, it is easy to understand that people do not want to take any risks.

    • Stefan says up

Indeed, keep in mind that it will first get even worse than 2020.
President Macron said in March: “Nous sommes en guerre” or… We are at war.
These could well have been prophetic words when you see that each country is taking separate measures, that there are travel restrictions, curfews, etc. Typical of a war: you don't know when it will end.
Thailand has done better than Western countries to date. You can't blame them for this, although it is annoying for tourists and families who are separated by borders and strict rules.

      • chris says up

Wars always end with a treaty that is an expression of common sense. In other words: peace brings in more happiness and money than war.
So: a meeting of the United Nations in 2021 and we decide that the world is over with these nonsensical and disastrous measures.

  4. BramSiam says up

It would be nice if Thailand investigated how many people actually develop corona during their quarantine. If there are few or none, one might wonder what exactly one is doing. But the Netherlands is not much smarter. Here too you will not get a concrete answer to, for example, the question of whether or not you can be infected in the open air. Governments act on the advice of self-righteous 'scientists'. With 10% knowledge they make 100% decisions and they are uncritically supported.

  5. John Chiang Rai says up

As far as is now known, an already vaccinated person cannot get sick again, although science is still not sure whether an already vaccinated person can still infect an unvaccinated person.
If it becomes clear that a vaccinated person can no longer infect, or at least 75% of the Thai population has had a vaccination, the strict regulations of quarantine, etc. will relax themselves.
Although there are still many people in Europe who are against the vaccine, I see it as the only option to return to normality.
Someone who is against a vaccine, and also against lockdown and quarantine etc, with their rigid refusal to get vaccinated, that we end up from one lockdown to another, and will not be free from a mandatory quarantine for a long time.

Better safe than sorry I would say.

  7. Eddie Lampang says up

It continues to balance…what is the balance between health versus economy?
No one has this wisdom in a monopoly.
The future will show which decisions were better/worse.
Thailand is also not escaping the advance of this persistent virus, despite the efforts already made.
This means that in 2021 I will probably not go to my dear wife's homeland.
Postponement is not adjustment. We wait patiently to see what it will be….. With hope of blessing.

  8. Marinus says up

Shame! With a vaccination it seems to me as a layman really safe, but Thailand is not taking any risks. My Thai girlfriend keeps saying. We in Thailand deal with Covid 19 much better than, for example, Western Europe. In the Netherlands you do much better in traffic. Thailand ranks second as one of the most traffic-unsafe countries. I foresee that I will not travel to Thailand for the time being. But it will definitely be easier to come here again.

  9. Marc Dale says up

A safe, good approach, which should also be the rule in other countries. When it comes to such matters, Europe could learn a lesson from some Asian countries.

  10. Fred says up

They are destroying their own tourism sector

  11. Marijke says up

I am afraid that there will be no tourists again in 2021, very bad for that beautiful country that depends on tourism.

    • stains says up

      Sorry Mary

Thailand is not dependent on tourism at all.

Only 5% of the GDP consists of tourism.

Of course things are bad with the tourist places like Pattaya, Patong, Koh Samui
      Koh Pangan, Huahin ,Chiangmai.

In these tourist places people now have the time to renew the entire infrastructure roads, sewers, cable network and to buy up and renovate old buildings and bankrupt companies.

Currently, work is being done throughout Thailand on improving and renewing the infrastructure
so that in 2 to 3 years the tourist will return to Thailand with a modern road network.

      • Fred says up

        5%?

I thought +-20% of GNP is tourism
5% seems very little to me, that is not true on any side

      • adjective says up

You can say that Thailand is not dependent on tourism, but there are 100 thousands of inhabitants who do depend on tourists. I am thinking of those who work in/or own hotels, bars, entertainment venues, tourist attractions, the tourist islands, street stalls, taxis, and so on. They have a very difficult time keeping their heads above water without tourists.

      • Renee Martin says up

Last year, 1 in 6 worked in the tourism sector (Source Flanders investment). GDP is significantly higher and Thailand's tourism income was about 17% (Wikipedia). So in my opinion there is clearly pain and it is not without reason that many people are queuing up to pick up free food.

      • Rob says up

Dream on Pete, as soon as the rain stops they see that the water drains by itself, so no need to renovate the sewer system, renew the cable network? why does it still work every now and then a power failure who cares? Renew roads why in a year's time there will be holes in them again and that is due to the bad road builders and that everything has to be cheap.
Beautiful and good things have almost all been done with foreign support and investors.

        • stains says up

          Hello Rob

If you would go a little further than the usual tourist places, you will see that a lot of work is being done on the infrastructure in Thailand.

from Ponpisai to Nongkhai is a new 4 lane highway.

In Nongkhai, because of past floods, a complete new sewerage system with a diameter of 1,5 meters and more than 15 km has been installed beyond Nong Song Hong.
Roads in Nongkhai have also been widened and street lighting has been renewed.

The narrow road to Thabo has been widened where necessary and has become 4 lanes on some stretches.
From Thabo to Si Chiangmai a brand new Highway is being built to Sangkhom.

Also drive from Lom Sak route 203 then turn right towards Sila then route 2016 to Wang Sapong beautiful new roads through low mountains and sunflower fields.

By the way, Rob, I don't know how long ago you were in Pattaya, but the entire beach road has been refurbished there, including the sewage system and the associated beach.

In Chonburi, a completely new bridge of a few kilometers in length has been constructed on the entire sea side.

With this I want to say that people in Thailand are really busy with the infrastructure alone
in places where hundreds of buses, taxis and traffic drive every day, it is not easy to renovate something.

Thus, when this corona period lasts for another 1 year, it can be an excellent opportunity to take a big step here and this is now also happening throughout Thailand.

If you want I will keep you informed of developments in Thailand on my tours through Thailand.

      • John Massop says up

As already mentioned, Thailand is according to official sources for about 17% dependent on tourism. But there's more. Is the taxi driver in Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya officially employed in tourism? No, they are registered with the transport sector, but it is still doom and gloom in that business because there are no tourists now. And supply companies that mainly supply restaurants in tourist areas? Are also not listed under the tourism sector, but are now being hit. And the many 7-Elevens in Pattaya, for example, have also largely seen their trade collapse. A reasonable number of them have even closed their doors. These are also not seen as being a “tourist sector”. And so I can go on and on. In a while the data will show exactly how big the blow to Thailand has been, and I can already say that it has been significantly larger than the mentioned 5%….

  12. Eddy says up

This will soon be adjusted if other countries in the region start to accept it. Thailand cannot do without tourists and then they know all too well …….

  13. Bert says up

I can imagine now that the vaccination has just started (the Netherlands not yet)
    careful to relax the rules.
I think we'll have to see what the effects are in 3 months.
Hopefully it will be a bit easier to go to Thailand then, but it will still look like coffee grounds.
I do wish everyone a healthy and covid19 free 2021

  14. ron says up

now foreigners are still seen as possible virus spreaders, the roles may be reversed at the end of 2021. Foreigners vaccinated and the Thai not and possibly in pandemic.

  15. Jacobus says up

I've been out of the isolation prison for a week now and what strikes me most is that I haven't been able to catch a single Thai that he / she observes the 1.5 m distance. So nowhere, not on the street, not in the mall, not on the market, not at home with 6 friends. So nowhere. So Europe cannot learn from that.

    • Stan says up

I also see that with the Thai instagram ladies. The past few months it was just long live fun with friends and going out…

  16. Fred says up

In Belgium we have a death rate of 19.000 out of 2.000.000 infections, even if we assume that all 19.000 are due to covid19 and we actually CERTAINLY don't know that. That's 0.0095, less than 1 percent. Can we stop this repression? Stop locking everyone up unnecessarily.
    Stop the madness

    • JAN says up

An acquaintance (nurse) who works in Bangkok Pattaya Hospital reported that the day before yesterday there were 80 admitted patients with corona in Pattaya, of which 50 are in BPH and 30 in 2 other hospitals. I haven't read this anywhere on an official site! What I did read on the official government site is that in “worst case” by mid-January there could be 18000 infections per day in Thailand!

      • fred says up

50 patients in Bangkok Pattaya Hospital ? They will not be Burmese or Thai road workers.
Would surprise me because to lie there you either have to be a well-insured Farang or well-to-do Thai.
Oh, you read or hear something different every hour.

I rather have the impression that it is mainly becoming a big media circus. For example, I no longer hear anything about Brazil or India….Ecuador? That's where the coffins were stacked at a certain point?

    • adjective says up

You make a calculation error. 0,0095% of 19.000000 is 190 dead.
It should be 0,95%. Indeed, slightly less than 1%, but still too much.

    • Stan says up

How did you get that 2.000.000 Fred? The official counter stands at 641.411 infections and 19.361 deaths, which is 3,02%.

    • leonthai says up

      19000=X x 2000000 divided by 100 that's 0.95 not 0.0095…learn how to count man.

  17. Rob says up

I had hoped to be able to go to Thailand again sometime at the end of next year. My wife has not seen her family for 2 years. But I'm not going to quarantine for 2 weeks when I'm vaccinated later. Then she goes alone.

  18. Teun says up

I quite understand that Thailand is careful, but what I really don't understand is that when you are officially married, you can quarantine together in 1 room, but if you have been living together for years and have a cohabitation contract, this is not allowed. You will really have to book 2 separate rooms.

    • Robby says up

Yes, I have yet to believe that the mandatory quarantine in these expensive hotels several major members of the government own shares in these hotels

  19. tonnie says up

The Thai people can travel around their own country without restrictions
around the turn of the year. While the foreigners who have been vaccinated on arrival in Thailand still have to be quarantined for 14 days
The government shares in the profits of the quarantine hotels

  20. Hugo says up

The Thai all wear a mask anyway and they are convinced that this stops everything.
So keeping your distance, washing hands regularly, etc. is really not necessary.
Oh yes and cheap labor from Myanmar, of course, they should not be checked and they are all safely packed in poorly ventilated slums…
We westerners always think we know better…

  21. adjective says up

Also make a mistake. Should be 0,0095% of 2000.000 is 190 dead. 19000 deaths out of 2000000 is 0,95%

  22. Thailandgoer says up

I had high hopes for February, but tickets have already been refunded through Lufthansa in October.
I had now pinned my hopes on the end of April, but unfortunately that is not the case either.

Looking for another destination for the first time in 10 years…

Above all, I think it is very sad for the people who do depend on tourists, the catering industry, hotels.
But also for the people who have family living in Thailand and who can't visit them now.
Although, if I had the time, I would have gone into Quarantine without hesitation to visit my loved one in Thailand. In fact, if I was already in a position not to work anymore, I would have been in Thailand for a long time.

It will soon no longer be the old one, on the other hand, a major cleaning was also necessary. I won't be the right-wing rascal who says that the course can also have its way. That's also good sometimes. (Oops told)

  23. Lydia says up

We're not going for now. First we wait to see how everything goes here. And we don't want to experience a second time that our ticket is canceled and we can whistle for our money. No more Thai Airwais for us.
