The Thai government wants an end to the sale of laughing gas, which is mainly bought by tourists. Laughing gas is not a drug, but it can be dangerous.

Laughing gas used to be an anesthetic used in hospitals and by dentists. As a drug, the gas is offered in balloons and inhaled from there. It provides a short, psychedelic intoxication. Sometimes the user gets fits of laughter. The effect occurs after about 20 seconds and lasts for several minutes.

In areas in Bangkok where many backpackers come, such as the famous Khao San Road, the balloons with laughing gas are sold. A balloon with laughing gas costs 130 baht, about 3 euros. The police have now arrested eight sellers.

According to Pitiphan Kridakorn of the police, laughing gas was initially often sold in popular tourist destinations such as Koh Samui, Pattaya and Koh Pha Ngan. The sellers have now also been spotted in Bangkok. The police try to curb the sale before the balloons become popular and accidents happen. The illegal sale of laughing gas can give the country a bad image, says Pitiphan.

Vendors who are caught risk a prison sentence of five years and a fine of 224 euros for selling medicines without a license.
