Tourists from all countries are welcome again in Thailand, regardless of the Covid-19 situation in their country. This relaxation of the entry conditions should ensure that more Special Tourist Visas (STV) are applied for for long stays.

However, all travelers must still comply with Thailand's mandatory XNUMX-day quarantine, said deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek. The more liberal policy is a U-turn from the government and is intended to help the ailing tourism industry.

Previously, STVs were only available to tourists from low-risk countries, but that strict condition meant that only 825 travelers took advantage of the scheme, Ms Rachada said.

The cabinet has also decided to extend the residence period for persons with an STV who moor in a Thai port by a further 30 days or a total of 60 days.

What are you allowed or required to do during those two weeks, are you allowed to leave the hotel for a walk or lunch, is there a list of hotels you can choose? Any information welcome e.g. thanks.

I have been a traveler to Thailand for many years, and am always there for 4 or 5 months during the winter. I find it difficult to get good information, partly because of your article it is a lot clearer. The strict quarantine of 15 days makes it impossible to travel to Thailand, being locked up in a room at 30 degrees is impossible. Thanks Cornelis for your contribution.
It is strange and stupid that ordinary sane people are banned and cause so much economic damage.

        • ruud says up

          There are also air-conditioned rooms.

Quote: It is strange and stupid that normal healthy people are banned and cause so much economic damage.

Sacrificing the economy for the Corona happens all over the world, right?
Thailand is no different from the rest of the world in this respect.
And whether you are healthy must first be checked, because you may have just been infected on the way to the airport and then be tested negative for Corona before departure.

The damage to the economy would probably be even greater if you let the disease run its course unchecked.

quarantine is, by definition, isolation. So nothing no walk outside your hotel. in some hotels after the 1st week (and Covid test) you can air for an hour a day on the roof, or walk around the swimming pool. but strictly speaking that already breaks quarantine... 10 days of confinement in the room would be strict enforcement of the Covid advice.

I don't think many foreign tourists want to spend 15 nights in a quarantine hotel, of which week 1 is strictly in the room and the 2nd week is just a short breather. There is a list (site?) of which hotels participate in the quarantine program. After 2 weeks of seclusion, there is still about 1-2 weeks left for the average Western tourist to enjoy a holiday. An average Chinese tourist doesn't stay that long.. (hence the call to waive quarantine from the tourist sector).

I still wonder what the situation is with the proposed, withdrawn and proposed plan of the ministry (of… forgotten) to have people put on a (GPS?) track and trace band after the quarantine period… then you can do some completely forget about the recovery of tourism.

I do not see a recovery of regular tourism in the coming months. Or that will be the death knell for companies in the sector, no tourists for a year or more, I fear that recovery will be very difficult and many companies in the sector will not last. We will see. Poor Thailand.

      • willem says up

Rob. Interesting what your experience of quarantine is. In other countries, too, the use of a garden or enclosed outdoor area or balcony is specifically permitted. The Netherlands has described it this way:

You can sit outside if you have a garden or balcony.

In other words, you also have to leave your room to go to the garden. They also call your quarantine isolation or solitary confinement. Fortunately, we are not in the EBI.

        • john says up

rob it is not so important what someone's experience of quarantine is. All that matters v is what it implies. Then the naming is not important. Is called quarantine by the Thai government, so it seems wise to use that word when we talk about quarantine in Thailand. But indeed, the Thai quarantine is solitary confinement in a hotel room of your choice, paid for by yourself. In principle, you are not allowed to leave for those fourteen (sometimes actually 15) days. But some hotels allow you a little more freedom VERY LIMITED after the first covid test. And you just have to deal with that.

      • john says up

I can inform you about this. Am in final stage of approval to enter Thailand. In one of the papers you declare that you agree with … . A summary of a number of things to be expected follows. But also that you are willing to download a tracking tracker on your phone.!!
So yes, it is not the ankle bracelet, but a tracking tracker on your phone is.!!

        • Cornelis says up

That 'tracking tracker' – that is currently not the case in practice.

Hello Joop, we are currently quarantined in Bangkok. The ASQ hotels all have small differences. You choose what suits you best, of course.
Alcohol is prohibited everywhere, and you are not allowed outside the hotel. Some hotels let you walk on the hotel grounds for an hour or an hour and a half after the first negative Covid test, in a designated place.
With us this was on day 4. And very welcome!
You can also find the hotels on the website of the embassy. And they are on the site of thaiest.com with reviews.
      https://thaiest.com/blog/list-of-alternative-state-quarantine-asq-hotels-thailand

Couples may share some rooms, but as a second person you always pay extra. This is also different per hotel.
Meals and drinking water are included in the price.
      A kind of all inclusive…..
Hope the information is of some use to you, good luck.

      • Mob NL Joop says up

Unfortunately, it is of no use to me because I will not do this, but thank you very much for the clear explanation.

    • Eric says up

      Hello Joop

“…are you allowed to leave the hotel for a walk or lunch,…”.

“Quarantine is ***isolating*** people and animals for a certain amount of time, for example before they enter a country. The purpose of the quarantine is to reduce the risk of these people or animals infecting others.

It is quarantine, so you are not allowed to go for a walk or “get out of the hotel for lunch”. The basis of quarantine is that you essentially have "0" contact with people. With the exception of 2 corona tests for which you can leave your hotel room under supervision. After this you will be immediately taken back to your room.

To make it even clearer: when it's dinner time there is a knock on the door and before you have opened the door the person has already arrived. The food will be on a table in the hall, right next to your room door. You can open the door to get the food and close the door again. And that 14 (no, 15 days long, day 1 is the first day after the first night of the stay).
So this is something different than leaving the hotel for lunch.. 😉

What else should you do in those 2 weeks? Stick to the rules so stay in your hotel room. You have to entertain yourself (TV, Internet, reading, sleeping). And every day (1 or 2 times) measure your temperature and pass it on to the nurse via the LINE app (take a selfie with the thermometer in your hand so that they can see your body temperature).

You will stay in the hotel for a total of 16 nights. Do you test positive during the first or second test? Then you go directly to the hospital that is affiliated with the relevant ASQ hotel. Whether or not you have symptoms is irrelevant, you have no choice.

I have no opinion whether anyone should do this to themselves or not. I am only stating what I know. But if you want to know: personally I wouldn't do it now, as for the future: never say never.

Is it already known whether the quarantine obligation will also continue if you are vaccinated against covid 19? (early next year)

    • Benver says up

I think that people in Thailand also know that someone who has been vaccinated can still be infected and can therefore pass it on. The vaccination is there not to get sick, but that does not mean that you are not infected. I did not make this argument up, but it is a proven fact.

  4. Kris Kras Thai says up

Good news for me. The website of the Thai embassy in Brussels does not yet report on this STV. But that may soon change.

In the meantime I already had an appointment at the embassy to obtain a Single Entry Tourist Visa. There are rumors that this type of visa can soon be extended by 45 days instead of 30 days. If so I may not need the STV again as I have to travel back at the end of April to mow my lawn.
But I agree with RonnyLatYa that one should be very careful about rumours, or maybe ignore them. Here's my rumor source: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0-U5iabk570

  5. Jozef says up

    Dear readers,

That they please stop giving hope in Thailand that is completely destroyed after a few days.
825 people worldwide have used the stv visa. !!!
Then as a government you have to see and or understand that this does not work. !!
There was also the so-called shortening to 10 days of quarantine, the next day in the refrigerator.
I'm starting to wonder if the Thai government has a "secret" agenda.
I fear that with the current new rules again not many tourists will take the bait, while the economy continues to sink and people who depend on tourism will also have to tighten their belts.
    So sorry everyone.
Wonder if we are welcome with no rules and quarantine after we are vaccinated.

Hopefully there will be some light at the end of this tunnel.

    regards

Now that the western world is about to switch to vaccination against covid 19, I wonder if if I am vaccinated, I still have to be quarantined if I want to holiday in Thailand
And how are you going to prove that you have a vaccination against covid 19.

    • keespattaya says up

I still have an old yellow vaccination booklet. During the first times that I visited Southeast Asia, I did get vaccinated against cholera, etc. I recently also had my vaccination for tetanus used when I had an accident with my bicycle. I also want to have my covid 19 vaccination put in this booklet.

  7. Rob says up

Yes, as my namesake Rob V. says. Quarantine is isolation by definition. Have now had 9 out of 15 nights and it is quite bearable. But yes, I am not a tourist, in 6 nights I will see my dear wife again, of course you are willing to pay quite a bit for that.

In my quarantine hotel the following applies: Until the first Covid test (5th day) in the room, if the test is negative you can leave your room for one hour a day (you have to book a day in advance, because you will be picked up and back to your room). Furthermore, pass on your temperature twice a day to the 'nurse' and also via an app (Coste). In a few days my 2nd Covid test (actually third if you count those in the Netherlands) and then after the 2th night into an almost Covid-free country.

My ASQ hotel is quite good (42.000 baht including everything), food is good, I have a spacious room with kitchenette (45m2) and also a spacious balcony and the staff is super nice. Actually quite relaxed.

For the people who find 2 weeks in a room too much, you can now also reduce your 2 weeks of quarantine in a golf accommodation. Costs a lot more I think. https://thethaiger.com/news/national/foreign-tourists-can-now-spend-the-14-day-quarantine-at-a-golf-course

Dear Rob, If that's the same Silver Palm where I was, what you say is correct, but the food is usually cold when it comes to the room. That was early November it may have changed, but I just happened to speak to someone who is still there until Tuesday and they said they usually leave it on. they are a thai and farang and if the thai says that, i think it has become a bit less than when i was there.

          • Rob says up

            Dear nl th,

The kitchen is equipped with a hob so it is not a problem. Simply put on the plate or in the soup bowl and simply heat up. Then I can just have breakfast, lunch or dinner (how fancy that sounds here!) at the moment that suits me. Very easy.

I do feel sorry for the people who work here. Working in protective clothing at more than 30 degrees, including the chambermaids, very hot. So unnatural to see the employees walking around in astronaut suits. And they remain friendly.

5 more nights. Is counting down now.

            • en th says up

              Dear Rob,
As I said, what you say is correct, only when my 2 weeks were over, the food was less tasty, we thought it was because it was getting busier.
I know about the hob because I also used it.
The people I happened to speak to said that she usually ordered it, since it was not edible just by reheating it. That may be a matter of taste.

The rest is exactly in line with my experience there.

Then I'm glad I'm staying in the isaan, saw a speech from our great leader on the news Netherlands TV via Internet from the NOS, must say that doesn't look promising there in the Netherlands.
He was talking about more than 10000 deaths related to the corona outbreak, so nothing here, but face masks duty in large shopping centers.
Yes and with those tourists here yes I must say there are not here, I need a beach holiday with my wife we have booked for New Years Eve Hotel in Pattaya for a bargain price with 4 star Hotel.
It's really everything cheap flying here and booking hotels let's keep it that way for a while thinks it's best here in Thailand.
And for those still in Qurantaine need what is 14 days on a long stay at Amazing THAILAND.

    • Aha says up

      Totally agree Caspar.
I'm also very relaxed in a (almost) Covid free Isaan. So we also wholeheartedly agree with a careful and accurate treatment of any. tourists and others who want to come this way. Reading the newspapers from NL simply does not paint the picture that people adhere to the guidelines.

We are also thinking of celebrating Christmas and New Pattaya with our presence. However, when I look on the internet, the prices are still almost the same; apparently I'm looking at the wrong hotels or on the wrong site. 🙂
Can you please share some details about hotel, price and site you book on?

      thanks in advance

      • Caspar says up

Book with AGODA up to 80% discount on Hotels in Pattaya take advantage of it !!!

    • Giani says up

Too bad you think that way
Certainly not the Thai in the tourist sector,
Neither do tourists or others who want/have to visit Thailand.
Are you ready for a vacation? and others don't?
Paying the bargain price to a sector that is bleeding to death and still proud of it?
And 14 days is an attack, it's staying in a comfortable prison without having done anything wrong, a test before flight should be enough.
I am pleased that there will finally be an opening, with the hope that it will be relaxed.
But to caspar and commenters, I think you are already in Thailand, in my eyes you are: selfish

      • ton says up

giani i completely agree with you those guests are already in thailand and probably feel superior to the regular holidaymakers but oh woe if these people were in the same boat as the people who would like to return to thailand without a virus then it would be suffering incalculable, then the hairs on the back of these people will stand upright yuck

        • Aha says up

Why should I feel superior to the vacationers. No, although I am glad that I just stayed in Thailand in March. And I sometimes feel a bit of gloating when the same people who then so happily let it be known that they could leave Thailand and sit out Corona in the Netherlands, are now suddenly complaining about the procedures. 🙂

And why would it be selfish if I would like careful and accurate work on the reception of tourists. (By the way, all Thai think the same here, even those who came back from Pattaya or Bangkok, so I'm not alone in this)

In the Telegraaf I read the day before yesterday:

'Fewer and fewer people are working at home, we have too many social contacts and we go to non-essential shops en masse on busy days.

But that's not all, De Telegraaf reports. After traveling from a high-risk country, it is urgently advised to self-quarantine at home for 10 days. The vast majority (70,5 percent) do not adhere to this. Even with complaints that may indicate corona, such as coughing and sniffling, the majority (68,2 percent) still go to work or to the supermarket. After a report from the GGD that there has been close contact with someone who has been diagnosed with corona, only 41,4 percent of people stay at home. Even those who have been diagnosed with the corona virus themselves, 17,8 percent of people still mix with others.

So should Thailand be so happy to receive such people? In addition, many think that the 2nd wave is largely due to the holiday behavior of people during the past holiday period, you see countless messages on the internet that show that so many people do not want to comply with the mask obligation (just to the Makro been, 99 % have a face mask on), many are kicking against the vaccination etc etc. It is full of counter-sounds.

And Thailand should welcome all those people with open arms and without quarantine? Well if it's not up to me.
And if you call that selfish then so be it.
          I call it wise.

Of course I hope that everyone can come back to Thailand safely soon. But until then, they will have to remain careful.

  9. Hans says up

Quarantine is a prison that you have to pay for yourself.

    • Caspar says up

Yes Hans that's what they are now earning from those Quarantine Hotels, they don't go back to 10 days soon, they don't help me, it's cash for the hotels.
This is more useful to them than those hordes of tourists who only stay 1 or 2 days in their Hotels Bangkok, and then continue on to beach holiday Pattaya or hua hin or to the north Chaing Mai.
What is 15 days of Quarantine, you're sitting out on a bag of nails 55555.

    • Eric says up

That's right Hans. Can't get a pin in between. It's a very strange "concept".

But for the people who really want to go to Thailand for whatever reason (I can't determine “the need” for someone else) it is the only entrance. It is a hassle, it costs a lot of money and 15 days of your life, but you are in Thailand where it is better to live in my opinion than in Europe at the moment. And you can stay there for months.

Personally, an ASQ is not (yet) an option. Never say never.

The big stumbling block remains the mandatory self-pay quarantine in a hotel, instead of in your own condo, plus the bureaucratic paperwork. Unfortunately, it will remain “cold” for a while, although we are now also working on plans to leave Thailand, due to the inflexible government and other undesirable developments in the last 10 years. So a good time for reconsideration. We then rent our condo through a friendly broker and sell it when the real-estate market is finally back in balance (it will take years).

Buy the Oculus Quest 2 in the Netherlands, a standalone VR headset, for which you have programs that allow you to travel virtually all over the world. You can also install fitness programs for boxing, fencing, dancing, table tennis and what not. The image you see is so good that you imagine yourself in another world for two hours. Especially in a hotel room where you are locked up for two weeks, this is a very good way to pass the time and even to keep fit.

    • john says up

  13. Jaco says up

Everyone agrees that I think this is another strange leap in the wrong direction. You certainly cannot enter Thailand if you are already positive before the flight. If you are negative then you are a cash cow for 15 days. That's how I see it. Normally I go home. Now they first pull my legs out and then I can go home for a while. And hop back to work. I can also quarantine at home. That is not necessary in a hotel of 3600 bht per day. I normally never get into such expensive chicken coops. I think a hotel of 1500 is expensive enough to have to sit in such a concrete block. Nice resort is another story . Yes, so I'm pretty pissed that I can't just go home after work. Tested negative get into a taxi who tell me that driver is also negative and the horel staff who make my obligatory hotel. They lock up healthy people and walk the sick on the street. How double can it be . Don't come that the comas or the dots are reversed. I haven't paid attention to that for a while.

That's not right at all. I live in CNX.
There was a woman who was infected with the virus and who had been in contact with about 300 people. That is very different from 300 infections.
After all these people were traced and tested, no one turned out to be infected.

Where do you get all these lies from?

    • RobHH says up

I can't believe anyone is giving thumbs up to this post. Bullshit of 'pulling your legs out' and 'milk cow for fifteen days'…

Although I am also stuck in the Netherlands and have a hard time getting used to the cold here, I can only appreciate the Thai policy. Especially when I consider that half-hearted thing in Europe.

Thailand is practically Corona-free. The total number of corona deaths is lower than the daily number of road casualties. I say 'Good job!'

When I can go back, I'll just take that quarantine into the bargain. It's worth it to me to see my loved ones again.

Don't forget that many more countries worldwide have closed their borders to tourists. All of Southeast Asia is on lockdown. Australia, New Zealand. And many more countries.

Otherwise, go to Curacao. They seem happy to take your Euros. And your Covid with it.

      • Cornelis says up

If the Netherlands/Europe had only allowed entry with quarantine, the figures would also look different than they do now. As long as you can fly to Schiphol from all kinds of trouble spots and then just walk through there, it is inevitable that you will also 'import' a few things in addition to the domestic infections.

  14. Frits says up

I am currently on day 11 of my quarantine. Day 0 is the day of arrival and on day 15 you will be released. So you stay in the hotel for 15 nights. You will be locked in your room for the first 7 days. I didn't get my room key and the elevator can only be operated with that key. The only person you see is the nurse who comes to take your temperature twice a day. Food is placed in front of your door 3 times a day.

From day 7 you can spend 45 minutes outside in the common area of the hotel. The Thai are not very punktlich with time, so if you sit outside for 2 hours nothing will be said about it.

I can recommend everyone to book a spacious suite. The 69 m2 I have are definitely worth their money. I don't want to think about spending two weeks in a hotel room where you can just walk around the bed. Then it really feels like a prison cell.

You can find the latest list of hotels at https://hague.thaiembassy.org/th/content/119625-asq-list .

The staff is super friendly as usual in Thailand. However, that does not change the fact that you hardly have any freedom for 15 days. In a few days, however, I will be rewarded with eating out every day and enjoying New Year's Eve with fireworks. And wonderfully flying around domestic corona-free and having all the sights to myself..

99% of the Thai who have lost their income will think otherwise.

        • Jack S says up

I think that number will be at most 50%. Many are looking for another job and Thai domestic tourism has increased, because the Thai cannot leave either. So they go on holiday in their own country. In the weekends it is already time for many hotels to be cooked. Anyway, my wife and I do go to places where few foreign tourists come anyway. Certainly not Pattaya goers.

          • Jm says up

I have never seen a Thai come to Europe on holiday!
For going to work yes and at the invitation of their friend.
And the ordinary Thai have no money to go on vacation, not before and certainly not now.
There is simply no work left so looking doesn't help.

Jm, Europe is only a small part of the world. You will probably not meet the Thais who can afford it. Many Thais who go on holiday abroad fly to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore… last year we wanted to go to Kuala Lumpur with the new service from Hua Hin… which was always booked out.

      • Ger Korat says up

You have absolutely no idea of the reality, more than 10 million of the 38 million jobs are at risk with multiple people depending on these jobs. Just heard today that of the 40 children in my son's class, only 10 are left and half of them have not yet paid the school fees and want a payment arrangement. And then I talk about Korat, the last place dependent on tourism. Ask about car sales, one of the first hit by a crisis: almost halved, ask about household debts: rising enormously and is the highest in Asia and a debt crisis is expected, and so on to practical examples. Time for Sjaak to read a newspaper or check the internet full of articles so that you know what is going on among the population and what the state of the Thai economy is like.

quote:”There are around 13 million jobs at risk and of losing their income. That's one third of the labor force,” said Dr Somprawin Manprasert, chief economist at Bank of Ayudhya. ”

You're right. That was a stupid response on my part. Normally I google for numbers and then I come up with a fact and not a statement. The tourism sector has been hit hard everywhere.
Only where I go I see steady progress. If you live near Hua Hin, go to Pak Nam Pran. At least three projects, which had been halted before Covid, have started again there. A hotel that was empty for months, with a beautiful large swimming pool, has started renovation.
Every time we cycle past, we greet a few ladies who offer a massage service and who have now also built a coffee bar (maybe with the help of sponsors).
And as I said, a lot of places where we go for a weekend are already booked out.
But I have also read about Phuket, Koh Samui and Pattaya, which are almost entirely dependent on Tourism.
And of course also entire sectors that directly or indirectly lose income as suppliers due to a lack of tourism.
As long as you are not really affected yourself, like most people I know, you depend on the sources as you point out. Because personally I hardly see any deterioration. On the contrary, I see slow growth. And if all goes well… maybe to a Thailand without cheap tourism. With some statements here, I am happy with Thailand's policy…where I am also on the right side of the border…

Yes, last year I also went to Thailand to my wife, but to spend 2 weeks in a hotel and pay just under 1000 euros I think it is a shame, if I stayed there it would be a different story, the best thing is to just take your wife here let them come and come back after 3 months because so far that is still free in the hotel if you opt for that arrangement through the Thai embassy, so watching a Christmas movie will be Home alone and yes Robert ten brink maybe email further stay positive people agree it will be fine merry christmas

    * Something about: the left hand, don't know what the right hand is doing?

I have read this post, except on Thailandblog, on a number of other sites. But, is that STV now for 90 days? Or still 3*90 days? I can't make sense of it.
