The military junta seems to be quite concerned about the beaches in Thailand. First the beach of Phuket had to be cleaned up, then it would be Pattaya's turn and now it is also possible Hua Hin be added to this list.

The provincial authorities of Prachup Khiri Khan therefore intend to put an end to the nuisance caused by local entrepreneurs who break the rules.

Governor Weera Sriwattantrakul held an emergency meeting and there will be a D-Day for Hua Hin beach. Illegal beach tent holders must go, that also applies to the rental of beach beds. The quality of service at the beach must be raised and food prices must be lowered. The cleaning campaign will soon start with the removal of stalls by municipal workers.

As for the price of food at the beach, the governor will require local business owners to sign an agreement under which they charge normal pre-agreed prices.

The local entrepreneurs are not happy with these measures and have sent a delegation to Bangkok to ask the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to abandon these plans.

The governor further said that from now on any violation of the regulations would no longer be tolerated. Detained suspects can count on legal action.

In my opinion a bit exaggerated, there are not that many beach bars and sun loungers. There is a concentration at the Hilton Hotel, but that is not too bad. I think most tourists are not happy with these actions. Clearly a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

In Hua hin it is indeed not the case that you are suffocated by crazy amounts ….

There are other areas that needed a more urgent visit !!!

    • YUUNDAI says up

Also agrees with the high restaurant prices Khun Peter,
And those messy and too weak beach chairs?
No, the general is right here, he also eliminates a piece of the mafia.

    • Anne says up

Well Peter, I thought it was quite full and had a bit of a Rimini (Italy) feeling where people have also gone too far on the beaches there (with the marked out places). In addition, the prices do not lie. By far the most expensive thing we paid during our tour in Thailand.

      • Khan Peter says up

I think that people who know Hua Hin a little will not lie on the beach near the Hilton Hotel anyway. You cannot properly enter the sea because of the many rocks with sharp vegetation. The busiest beach is therefore also the ugliest beach. You better walk towards Khao Takiab. It is even better to drive to Khao Takiab with a moped and go to the beach there. I pay 100 baht rent for a beach bed with umbrella for a whole day. The prices of food and drinks are indeed on the high side. Everything is a bit more expensive in Hua Hin, but that also has advantages. There will be a somewhat different kind of audience.

Worse is the discharge of the open sewer into the sea. You regularly see the brown sludge at the edge of the sea. They should also pay attention to the incredible use of plastic bags, which are then easily thrown on the street or in nature. It's good that people are at least paying attention to the pollution.

  3. phet says up

I would like a beach bed with an umbrella on the beach.
Otherwise I really can't go to the beach, I'll burn alive in the sun!!!

  4. huub says up

It's very nice that they clean up those beaches, but
It is of course also to be hoped that those permits will be issued soon
and that the prices are announced Because that's how it is very boring on the beaches
    If you can't relax there
Been to Phuket 2 weeks ago and it was boring on the beach
    Just complaining people

  5. m.mali says up

Khao Takiab, is already overcrowded in high season by people who spend the winter there and sometimes you can't get a beach bed anymore, because they are all occupied early in the morning..
I don't know if all beach owners have a permit, but I do know that they pay a lot for a place there…
I hope that many beach owners will not disappear there, because indeed then it will be a fight for a beach bed or beach chair.
I also hope that something is done about the sellers of clothing who come by at least 5 times a day to sell you something…
Fortunately, people know us and they know that they don't have to ask us anything anymore since we are not tourists…
However, they do come and have a nice chat with my Thai wife….

    • Khan Peter says up

I have been to the beach of Khao Takiab quite often and have never experienced that all beach beds were occupied.

    • Pim says up

At Khao Thakiab there are more beaches than tourists that are much nicer just outside the center of Hua hin
Tourists are often pointed to the center where the rocks in the sea are dangerous, and they are also harassed by sellers.
      Give me Khao thakiab .

    • John D says up

We have been coming to Khao Thakiab for years, but we have never experienced the beach beds.
In the months of Dec, Jan, Feb and March the beds were full and there was enough room.

  6. Kees says up

So let them tackle all the garbage on Jomtien Beach and Dongtan Beach….
The beach chair rental companies are too miserable to keep it clean and refuse to keep the "no man's land" between two beach chair rental areas clean: "Not my place", is the stupid argument.
And in several streets at Jomtien Beach. Take, for example, the soi after the double Soi Welcome, which is a complete rubbish dump!

  7. Cees says up

When will the beach beds return to Patong Beach? Don't even think about lying on a towel all day.

  8. huub says up

Cees as I understand from the sellers on the beach who were still walking around
that it might not be until next year
But no one is certain yet

I don't really understand the grumbling of expats/tourists. Tackling and smothering any kind of unwanted situations in tourist hotspots can never be wrong. On Kho Samui, for example, Bulgarians shamelessly peddled with watches. In Pataya, Russian women at work. Local authorities bribed by filthy rich foreigners. etc…..
Personally and with me many (farang and Thai), have been waiting for some time for this to be done.
Conversations with Thai people on this subject have taught me that they avoid these places for various reasons. (It goes too deep for me to go into further detail here.) A category of farangs, often novice Thailand visitors, may not immediately notice the abuses. And that is where things often go wrong. If no action is taken, they are easy prey if left unchecked.
These places must also remain available, feasible and accessible for the ordinary Thai. So safe, accessible and affordable.
A simple and small example from Hua Hin “somtam” for 60bath on the beach is too expensive, every gladiolus who is a bit price-conscious knows that. Especially if you can buy the same somtam a little further away for 30 bath, including vegetable garnish and sticky rice. I would like to mention that the situation in Hua Hin has gotten the least out of hand. But it remains latent without any intervention. The mafia will always be looking for a new area of activity.
Personally, I hope that it may one day come to the point where complaints are given serious consideration by the authorities.
It must be said that I am pleased with this critical development.

In my opinion, the most beautiful and also most out of place beach bar in Hua hin was removed a few years ago, but it could also be that it simply disappeared into the sea during a spring tide.

That was that pirate nest just past the Sofitel. It was kind of built from driftwood and it had the look of a Hippie place from Koh Pangang from the 90s.
You could go there for a tattoo or even a jonko, but you could also order a Khao Phad with a beer.
That tent really didn't fit on the beach of Hua Hin with all those strolling baby boomers in their white pants.
By the way, I only noticed that the family that ran it has now settled at the end of I believe soi 75.
I hope they can continue their business because it is a shame if all those families who have been earning their money on the beaches of Thailand for years and years are simply put away by the big moneymakers with their resorts and hotels.
They are always very nice people that you would give your last baht and for whom I have been coming to Thailand for 25 years.

    Regards, Moodaeng

    • Khan Peter says up

You mean the Paleo Bar https://www.thailandblog.nl/stranden/nostalgie-verdwijnt-hua-hin/
It sure was a nice tent. Jam sessions were held. You could sit there and drink a beer.

  11. Moodaeng says up

Well indeed! Indeed, that was him. I didn't know you wrote about that years ago. I also didn't know it was called the Paleo bar as I used to go there so often. Funny.
Now I immediately know about how and what.
    Thanks.

    • Chris from the village says up

Too bad they are gone and yes, it was a Hippie place.
I used to sit inside a few times (backstage)
then a bong did the rounds
      and then we started jamming…

  12. ruud says up

I don't understand the smear campaign against the beach chairs. (See forum Phuket Gazette for example)
Possibly they took up too much beach, but what I remember from the past, in Patong Beach all those beach chairs were occupied by tourists.
Apparently there was a need for those chairs and umbrellas.
By the way, those chair rental companies wouldn't buy chairs and certainly wouldn't put them up if people didn't sit on them.
And to my great surprise, the jet skis – for years the center of criminal activity on the beach – are given free rein.

  13. Michael Van Windekens says up

If anything should be banned on the beach in HuaHin, it's HORSES
Dangerous if they run wild because the landlords are sometimes meters behind, even with children.
Also that racing against each other, where the entire beach population has to make sure they get away.
And the dirty junk they drop is only picked up when someone is watching, and then those cowboys throw the plastic bags wherever they can. Even the tourists who drive alone never clean up the dirt. And then just walk into the sea with the horses to let them piss.
Why not a demarcated zone of about a kilometer, so that those people can still earn their living.

    • Chris from the village says up

A few years ago, the shit just kept lying
and now it is – mostly – already picked up
but I have never heard of an accident with
      horses / people ...
And don't forget all those people who piss (and shit) in the water.
      So should they go?

  14. MarkD says up

The sellers can stay away from me and the horses, I saw a large horse escape last December, dangerous! The horse ran from behind (at the height of the Centara) towards the sea and then parallel to the sea towards the Hilton. it ran past my lounger (where I was awakened by screaming) and saw the horse coming towards me.

Fortunately no one was hit, although it was very busy and many children were playing, really lucky that no one was hit..

  15. phet says up

    amazing thailand!
This hassle with the beach beds shouldn't take too long.
It is very bad for tourism anyway.
Every year I book a guesthouse without a swimming pool, because I have almost every one anyway
day to the beach with a nice lounger and where I can eat and my drink
    can order.
