The unique Khao Sam Roi Yot swamp in Prachuap Khiri Khan is completely dry, says Rungrot Atsawakuntharin, head of the national park. The swamp is special because of the many lotuses and it is populated by thousands of migratory birds.

Normally there is sufficient water supply through the many creeks and the Tenasserim mountain. The water should be three to four meters deep, but it hasn't rained in the area for years.

The swamp is a recognized place of international importance, according to the Ramsar Convention. According to Rungrot, the recognition is not in danger, because the drought has a natural and not human cause. He is concerned about the consequences for the ecosystem of the swamp. The water plants and lotuses with pink and white colors have disappeared, birds have difficulty finding food and also stay away.

The residents of the area are complaining because the tourists stay away.
