The municipality of Bangkok wants the heavily polluted Saen Saep canal to become clean again within two years. The area also needs to be renovated to become a tourist attraction.

The canal will then also serve as a shelter in case of heavy rainfall in order to prevent flooding.

To achieve this, a lot has to happen. There are 1.300 factories along the canal, 30 of which discharge untreated into the canal. The factories have been ordered to stop doing so.

Good idea, such an open sewer in the city is not really attractive. But the real cleaning must still take place in the mentality of many Thai people who just dump and throw everything away without paying attention to consequences, and a good waste processing industry. That channel won't get clean before that. but it is a beautiful dream.

Finally! Then it may also smell less dirty.

I take the boat almost daily. One can clearly see that the water looks better for a small part of the river. It is so distressing to see, despite the efforts to clean the water, rubbish is still being thrown into it .

Even the conductors on the boat throw their part of the ticket, which they tear off, into the river. Last year I saw a boatswain throw his drinking cup with plastic bag into the water in front of us, laughing.

What a low consciousness those people have. But they are the first to complain about the government.
