The Pollution Control Department (PCD) and the City of Bangkok (BMA) are considering measures as smog in the capital only worsened yesterday. For example, they are considering designating Bangkok as a pollution control zone.

Director Chatri of the municipal environmental office says that in all districts the concentration of PM 2,5 fine dustparticles has exceeded the safety limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (the WHO uses 25 micrograms as a limit). Yesterday afternoon, concentrations of 56 to 85 micrograms were measured at ten measuring points in Bangkok!

The BMA and the PCD meet about emergency measures. By designating Bangkok as a pollution control zone, local authorities can more easily take measures such as suspending classes and banning outdoor activities. A source at the PCD says that decisions should take into account the consequences for the economy and population.

Lecturer Thammarat of Mahidol University says that cleaning roads does not help. Only tough measures against polluting traffic will have an effect.

Again typical Thai not tackling the cause, but sticking a plaster here and there.

Stupid, dumber, dumbest. The Thai government wins the title of dumbest. Get those polluting vehicles out of traffic.

Dear editors, the title should contain (nota bene) exacerbated with a t, exacerbated or has exacerbated.

    • Thank you

Has nothing to do with Bangkok, but unfortunately the Doi Ithanon mountain was no longer visible from my house today.
The annual smog in Chiangmai and the surrounding area is quickly approaching again, as usual.

    Jan Beute.
