The Dutch went on holiday significantly less this year. Due to the economic crisis, the number of holidays fell by 3%, the largest decrease since the XNUMXs, according to the Dutch tourism agency NBTC-NIPO Research.

The decrease applies to both domestic and foreign holidays. Not only do the Dutch go on holiday less often, they also spend less money during the holidays.

Taking short vacations

Total holiday spending fell by 2 percent to 15,5 billion euros. Cutbacks were made especially on short holidays. Spending for long holidays remained stable.

About 15,8 million Dutch people went on holiday one or more times last year. That is 81 percent of the population. Compared to last year, this is 50.000 fewer people.

In the Netherlands, holiday spending remained the same. That is thanks to the beautiful summer. The coastal regions in particular benefited from this. The Veluwe attracted 10 percent fewer tourists.

Germany and France popular

The number of holidays abroad fell by 50.000 to 18,1 million. Just like last year, the top ten holiday countries are led by Germany, followed by France.
