The telecom authority in Thailand has issued a final warning to telephone providers: the license will be revoked immediately if they fail to register users of prepaid SIM cards.

The operators can also be fined if a mobile phone with an unregistered SIM card is used for illegal activities or a crime.

According to the NBTC, they are still seeing unregistered SIM cards on its network.

The NBTC is going to take a harder line because of the recent bomb attacks in the South. The police want to be able to trace the owners of the mobile phone when it is used to detonate bombs. 36 mobile numbers were used in the recent attacks, 3 of which were not registered. The 33 prepaid cards were sold via the Lazada website, but this registration also left something to be desired. The authorities are very angry about that.

The NBTC is particularly concerned about small telephone providers who may not have enough staff to meet the registration requirement.

    Understaffed?
If they use servers and databases (yes, that's cynical) then it's a matter of 2 commands.

There are now also plans in the Netherlands to make it compulsory to register sold SIM cards.
