The National Security Council (NSC) has advised the Thai government to extend the state of emergency imposed to contain the Covid-19 pandemic until July 31. It normally ends on June 30.
NSC Secretary-General Somsak Roongsita said on Thursday that the decree has yet to be extended for another month due to ongoing concerns about the Covid-19 situation.
Schools across the country will reopen on Wednesday and companies that have a high risk of transferring infections, such as nightclubs, will also reopen, so people want to be extra alert.
Critics and the opposition have asked the government to end the state of emergency, as it gives authorities the power to ban gatherings and protests and curtail other freedoms.
According to General Somsak, extending the state of emergency is not a political decision and will not affect people's daily lives. The state of emergency has already been extended twice since it was imposed on March 26.
Somsak points out that the virus is still active worldwide and the state of emergency makes it easy to intervene quickly if the virus flares up again.

If one waits for the pandemic to be over, whether there is a vaccine, or even a cure, then one can wait for years…
Meanwhile, their entire economy is falling apart. One of the main sources of income is tourism.
Without tourists, many are condemned to poverty. Will the government continue to give money (5000 THB) however ridiculously low, to keep millions alive?
At some point, people will have to go back to normal life.
Dear,
Almost everyone is talking about it in Thailand and almost everyone is convinced that the extension of the state of emergency has nothing to do with Covid-19 anymore. By almost everyone I mean the local Thai people.
However, I do not have a crystal ball like my namesake GeertP, but I do feel that it is becoming more difficult for the Thai to keep swallowing the government's measures.
Waiting to see how it will turn out.
Goodbye,
My girlfriend lives in Chiang Mai and indicated that the 5000 THB support has ended again.
Keeping tourists out has a very big negative impact on the ordinary Thai, who already have it wide anyway.
She also said that there are many cases of suicide because people can no longer stand this futureless behavior of the government.
Again, this has nothing to do with the Covid story.
There is currently a lot of panic about something that will bring about more than that whole Covid story.
I already announced yesterday that something big is coming in my crystal ball story.
Sure. And you keep withholding the information until big news comes along and then you say, That's it!
If you really have a crystal ball, say it now. Otherwise it's chatter in space.
You have missed your calling. It is better to stand at the fair with your crystal ball and try to bring your supernatural gifts to the man or woman instead of trying to predict the course of this corona crisis in Thailand.
It is almost inevitable that the people will revolt, after all, it is about their lives!!!!! This government is destroying everything, plus whatever consequences the radiation abroad can have, many who have been here for years have come on vacation for a long time turn this country the
back, but they probably don't belong to the target group of these smart riches anyway.
Good idea to extend the state of emergency until the end of the year, for example, you don't want situations like in the US
The government here is doing a great job given the difficulty of covid 19
By the way, Australia and New Zealand (and more countries) also have a lock down for tourists until the end of the year.
But well here are the farang who supposedly think they know better
This is how governments like it: uncritically praise everything they do or fail to do!
Cornelis, as 'guests' we can't start waving fingers. Asking difficult questions about whether the same result can be achieved with less drastic measures. Whether measures are proportionate, whether interests are weighed against each other, etc. We shouldn't ask leaders those kinds of legitimate questions. Imagine a real debate by various parties involved and interested parties. What crazy ideas you have. Soon you will continue to babble about whether the current measures may hit Thai citizens unreasonably hard. Father knows what is good for us. Close your mouth, get on your knees under a photo of Prayuth and apologize. 555
I can lift a corner of the veil in a somewhat cryptic description, just see what you do with it.
For those who are waiting for a sign of life from our eastern neighbors, that will not happen!!!!!
In many countries, the government takes on more power than is democratically desirable. This is a worldwide phenomenon and Thailand is no exception. State of emergency, emergency laws, encroachment on constitutional liberties…it is everywhere.
It is remarkable that the majority of the population in these countries support the strict, partly undemocratic policy. Rutte has never been so popular.
A small addition.
In my opinion, this pull of more power by many governments has everything to do with the decline of the neo-liberal, capitalist thinking of governments and companies. More and more citizens are starting to see that this way of economics distributes revenues unevenly and unfairly (the rich get more and more, partly supported by government measures to favor the rich and let the working people benefit much less and partly pay the bill) , and is also a major environmental damage. It MUST be different, but not everyone wants to see that, and certainly not those who benefit most from the current and the same returning economy under the new normal. Take a good look at the sectors that are allowed to open first. Not the sectors that citizens are most concerned about.
We have to move from 'more (money, goods) and the same' to 'less and different'. The origin of the Corona virus has everything to do with the way we (and not just the Chinese) handle our food. Imagine a virus that jumps from pigs to humans. There are more than 12 million in the Netherlands. Road Netherlands. http://nvv.nl/administration_uploaded/37/64/2/Factsheet_varkenshouderij_juli_2016.pdf
How much power does Chris have in Thailand? Even with voting rights an even smaller share than in the Netherlands in that is certainly not about anything.
Democracy is not what it says and yet many feel better if things are arranged differently.
The good thing about Thailand is that you can earn good money if you have an idea and that gives hope to 70 million people.
I power? Well, influence I would call it and more than you think and suggest. Because if you can earn good money in Thailand, you can also have quite an influence when you walk the Thai roads and networks. And that doesn't go through the ballot box.
And so we walk another month with the wheelbarrow.
and what's in the wheelbarrow., self-interest and why, afraid of one's own people.
Surprised with nothing. July 28th is HIS birthday and given HIS popularity the 'powers that be' are taking no chances. Prior to July 28, police will be busy monitoring and visiting critics.
If their party has passed without any significant opposition, the state of emergency may be lifted.

Every country is tackling the Covid 19 problem in a different way. Thailand chooses the more prudent path. Whether this is wrong or not remains to be seen later. It is a fact that the number of infections has recently been at a (very) low level. It is understandable that the government is cautious about relaxing the measures. In the Netherlands it is not much different, the effect of a relaxation of the measures. Will only become apparent after a few weeks. The fact that the boundaries are not (yet) opened a crack is (very) annoying for those who touch it. Especially those who are directly dependent on tourists for an income. That it touches many people to the bone is undeniable. But the situation in the world is far from stable in terms of the number of infections. Some countries have not even reached their peak yet. Whether the government's fears are justified or unjustified, who knows. Been coming to Thailand for over 30 years, and have also lived there. The fact that we can't go there now is a loss. But there will also be other times. Let's keep the courage in it and not give up. For the local people it is many times worse than for us.
