The former parents-in-law of the Thai crown prince have been given a prison sentence for lese majeste. Apiruj and Wanthanee Suwadee (72 and 66) have to go to prison for 2,5 years.

Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn's wife fell from grace last year. Her family was dealt with harshly for corruption: nine family members were detained. Finally, the heir to the throne divorced her in December.

The parents of the ex-princess are said to have misused the name of the crown prince twelve years ago during a neighborly dispute. Their ties to the palace allowed the neighbor to be falsely charged with fraud.

Thailand has very strict penalties for lèse-majesté. The couple pleaded guilty and decided not to hire a lawyer, a tactic that often leads to a reduced sentence.
