The introduction of the Mangmoom card, which is comparable to a public transport card, has been delayed by a month. On November 1, the card must work in Bangkok and the surrounding area.

The delay is due to the late delivery of card readers intended for the BMTA's 2.600 buses. Now the mangmoom (spider card) can only be used on the Blue and Purple Line of the MRTA.

The Ministry of Transport is considering using portable card readers if it turns out that the card readers will not be available by the end of October.

The Mangmoom card should eventually replace all the different payment systems of bus, tram, metro, skytrain and ARL in Bangkok. The card can also be used on the toll roads.

Mangmoom is a Thai แมงมุม pronunciation mae:ng moem (long, short vowel; two middle tones) and means 'spider'.

Many buses already have those card readers, because they were needed for the poor people's cards with travel credit. Unfortunately they work, it is and remains Th and government business, almost never good. And the BMTA discovered that those machines performed well in tests in the garage with stationary vehicles, but in BKK traffic, well, that's another matter.
