BANGKOK- The Government of Thailand should no longer use special powers that limit civil liberties. This is according to human rights organization Human Rights Watch.

Five months ago, the government seized extra power in connection with the unrest in Bangkok and some other regions. Supporters of the ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra partially shut down the country with actions. The additional powers allow the Thai authorities, among other things, to arrest and detain suspects without charge.

According to Human Rights Watch, hundreds of politicians, activists and academics have been taken for questioning. There are also reports that journalists have been called to account for reporting misconduct by security forces. Human Rights Watch is also concerned about the treatment of detainees allegedly held in secret locations in Thailand.
