The Thailand-Myanmar border crossing at Mae Sot has finally reopened after being closed for three years, both because of the pandemic and the tense political situation in Myanmar.

Local officials hope the reopening will help revitalize trade and tourism in the area. Thai and Myanmar citizens can once again cross the border between Thailand's Tak Province and Myawaddy City in Myanmar via the 1st Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at the border crossing.

The reopening ceremony was presided over by Governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj and his Myanmar Representative, R U Zaw Tin.

The decision to reopen the border at the 1st Thailand-Myanmar Friendship Bridge was reached following a ceasefire announced by the Myanmar military earlier this month and peace negotiations.

    Thai and Myanmar citizens only.

With an opening you usually see that they first open the border for the citizens of both countries to get trade moving again as quickly as possible.

Later will normally follow for others, but you can't put a time on that.

    Dear readers,
read this article carefully: the reopening is only for THAI and Myanmar CITIZENS. It is CLEAR in this article. For people who do not belong to this category, the borders with MYANMAR are still CLOSED.
