The prison system in Thailand has announced that from next week personal prison visits for relatives of detainees will be allowed again. Visits have not been allowed since April 2021 due to Covid-19.

Ayut Sinthoppan says relatives across the country are allowed to visit detainees in 124 prisons because the COVID situation in these facilities is considered safe enough for visitors. However, he noted that 19 other prisons will remain closed as conditions in those facilities have not improved.

Family members can schedule visits from May 16, but must provide proof of full vaccination and a negative antigen or RT-PCR test result 24 hours before their visit.

Visits are limited to four 15-minute rounds per day – two in the morning and two in the afternoon. Relatives who cannot visit inmates in person can still schedule virtual meetings, which are also available for facilities that remain closed for in-person visits.
