October 21, 2020: King of Thailand Rama

The German government says that the Thai king has so far not broken any rules, such as carrying out political work on German territory. A meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag has come to this conclusion.

The German government believes that the king is allowed to make decisions now and then, as long as he does not carry out his work continuously on German soil. The view remains that it is unacceptable to engage in politics in Germany. Minister Heiko Maas (Foreign Affairs) said earlier that Germany will continue to closely monitor the course of events.

A member of parliament has asked questions in the Bundestag about the activities of the king, who spends a lot of time in Germany. Thai protesters have long wondered whether state affairs are taken care of during the stay in another country, such as the signing of royal orders and the budget.

The committee has emphasized that the Thai king has a visa that allows him to reside in Germany for several years as a private person and also that he enjoys diplomatic immunity as head of state. Revoking his visa would lead to a far-reaching diplomatic incident.
