Three tourists were injured by gunshots when a drunk Thai student, 27, started shooting at a restaurant in Chiang Mai. The perpetrator would have come to his act because a waitress in the restaurant had rejected him, writes Bangkok Post.

Chiang Mai police have arrested the man and said the suspect has passed a sentence. He shot five times with a 9mm pistol at a busy restaurant on Nimmanahaemin Road around midnight. The shooter is a sixth-year student at a university in Bangkok. The man stated that he was flirting with the waitress at the restaurant, but she rejected him. Her foreign boyfriend allegedly attacked him

The student then walked to his car to retrieve the gun. Then he started shooting in the restaurant, he fled after the shooting, but was later caught in a house.

The three injured tourists are a Canadian, a Korean and a Thai. The victims have been taken to hospitals in the area.

Police charge the suspect with attempted murder, carrying a firearm without a license, and possession of a firearm in a public place.

There are many weapons around and easy to get. That is a big problem in Thailand.
Thai people who live near the border with Cambodia often cross the border to buy a weapon there. Cheap and available everywhere, my girlfriend told me.

Been a member of a shooting club in the Netherlands, for that reason I was interested in the legislation here in Thailand regarding gun ownership.
It is easy for a Thai to purchase a weapon, he buys one from the arms dealer and has it registered with the police, and then he can have it at home to protect home and hearth. Then check with whom they dealing.
If he walks around with it, or he has it in his car, then he has a problem.
In the isaan almost all those rice farmers have a gun, they shoot those rice rats, which they also eat.

There are also a lot of homemade weapons in circulation in Isaan. For example, I sometimes spent an afternoon shooting with my father-in-law with a homemade rifle. Very primitive, a kind of musket that you still had to load with black powder, but nevertheless a firearm.
