Thailand wants to promote the durian (durian) as the main fruit for export. The typical fruit with the pungent smell is a big hit in China and cannot be beaten there.

“The durian is considered a special agricultural product,” said Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on at the online conference Global Action on Green Development of Special Agricultural Products. “Our durian is known for its premium quality and its unique smell, taste, taste and texture. It is also listed as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, which helps add more value to the fruit.”

The durian tops the list of agricultural exports worth more than US$2,9 billion (94,8 billion baht) or 2,5% of GDP. Exports are growing at an impressive 40% per year.

The fruit of the durian stands out because of its egg shape and the hexagonal thick spines. The large specimens are up to 30 cm long and can even weigh 8 kilos. The fruit consists of a number of fruit chambers containing a large hard seed. The seeds are surrounded by thick, cream to dark yellow, pudding-like seed coats. These seed coats, which look a bit strange, are eaten. You often see them wrapped in plastic in street stalls in Thailand. Due to the high export prices, the fruit is also becoming more and more expensive for the Thai.

  1. Mark says up

This Thai ministerial excellence is quoted as saying, “Our durian is known for its premium quality and its unique smell, taste, taste and texture. It is also listed as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, which helps add more value to the fruit.”

I have learned from the Thai durian growers in Laplae and on the eastern coast provinces that the taste of durian varies from species to species. Widely differing tastes. I can confirm this experimentally. I think the Monthong variety shown in the picture is very tasty, but I have also tasted varieties that were much less flavourful.

This Thai ministerial excellence should taste a number of different types of durian in order to sell marketing pitches with knowledge. He would be amazed at the diversity of smells and tastes.
