The Ministry of Health has announced that one more person has died from the cotona virus today, bringing the number of fatalities to 5. 91 new registered infections have been reported in 52 provinces, bringing the total number of patients to 1.136.

1.034 people have been hospitalized with covid-19, including 11 seriously ill people on ventilators. Meanwhile, 97 people have been discharged from the hospital, according to Dr. Anupong Suchariyakul, specialist from the disease control department. The death concerns a 50-year-old Thai man from Sungai Kolok district, Narathiwat.

Of all registered corona infections, 83% are Thai and 12% are foreigners. The 91 new infections can be traced back to three sources of infection. The first group are 30 people who were in contact with patients or the places associated with them such as a boxing stadium (5), an entertainment complex (7) and people who were in contact with infected patients (18).

The second group consists of 19 people: nine Thais and a foreigner who has arrived from another country and nine others who lived or worked in busy areas or in places frequently visited by foreigners, including a bus driver, a waitress and four operators.

Army chief: Stay home or there will be a curfew

"Stay at home this weekend or risk a curfew," said Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Pornpipat Benyasri. The curfew can also be set for hours during the day. Pornpipat says a curfew is inevitable if Thais ignore the request to stay at home.

The army chief wants Thai to stay at home for at least a week: “We need your cooperation to stay at home this Saturday and Sunday and to cancel all social activities. Stay home and stop the spread of the virus for the sake of the nation and keep doing that for a week. When a curfew is imposed, it is not only done for the night because the disease is active both during the day and at night. We must therefore restrain ourselves, so that the state does not have to do so with forced measures.”

The authorities set up 359 checkpoints in the country on Thursday and 7 in Bangkok to screen travelers so that the virus does not spread further.

A curfew will therefore only be intended for the big cities, because the police do not dare to patrol the villages at night.

What nonsense. How do they want to check this in the hundreds of sois that wind through Thailand? Groups of Thai women chat until late in the evening. The family shops, deep in the sois, are also open as usual.

I'm curious how it will all work out for us in Thailand. Must say that I think the measures are many times better than how they deal with them in the Netherlands.

'Many times better' than in NL? What do you base that on?

The measures in Thailand are suspiciously similar to the measures in the Netherlands and differ greatly from measures in Italy, Spain and China.

Measures better than in the Netherlands? Just wait another 2 or 3 weeks and you will see the effects of the stupidest decision they could have made, namely locking down Bangkok, after which many thousands fled that city and are now spreading throughout the country.

      Dear Lee,
Bangkok has not been completely locked down. What did happen is:
      – the shopping malls are closed with the exception of the supermarkets
      – a number of sectors are closed for several weeks, such as bars and restaurants, and all education;
      – the announcement that Thailand would close its borders with Laos and Cambodia has caused large numbers of foreign workers to go home
      – everyone was asked to work from home as much as possible.

All this has reduced the patronage of (small) shops and self-employed persons (the fruit, coffee and food stalls) to such an extent that people no longer have an income. Bangkok is relatively empty, but not locked down like cities in Italy or Spain. Yesterday I bought a new fan and my neighbor across the street still works in jewelry design, 5 days a week..
