The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) expects 14,4 million jobs to be lost in Thailand in the second and third quarters of this year due to the corona crisis and the ongoing drought.

2,5 million jobs will disappear in the tourism sector, 1,5 million jobs in industry and 4,4 million jobs in other sectors. Normally 3,9 million people work in the tourism sector and 5,9 million people in industry.

The number of employees in other sectors, such as schools, fresh markets, sports stadiums and shopping centers is estimated at 10,3 million people.

NESDC Secretary-General Thosaporn says the drought, which started in the middle of last year and will last until the first quarter of this year, is causing unemployment in the agricultural sector. There are approximately 370.000 unemployed seasonal workers, the highest number in seven years. A total of 6 million farmers have been affected by the drought.

If there are 14.4 million unemployed in the 3rd quarter and with a labor force of 38,2 million at the end of March 2020 (according to Bank of Thailand), the unemployment rate is 37.7%.

see the link with details of the Bank of Thailand labor force:

do the math with numbers that are in the blog.

Normally 3,9 million people work in the tourism sector and 5,9 million people in industry.
The number of employees in other sectors, such as schools, fresh markets, sports stadiums and shopping centers is estimated at 10,3 million people.
    So total: 3,9 plus 5,9 plus 10,3 is 20.1

    Number of jobs at risk:

2,5 million jobs will disappear in the tourism sector, 1,5 million jobs in industry and 4,4 million jobs in other sectors.
    is therefore: 8.4 million
is 41,8 percent. ALMOST HALF !!!

    unbelievable!!!
