Authorities in Buri Ram and Samut Prakan provinces have warned residents of a possible rabies outbreak during the summer season.

In Buri Ram, testing of 77 samples showed rabies in 23 of them, the samples were collected from cats, dogs and water buffaloes.

Buri Ram Governor Anusorn Kaewkangwan is asking owners of dogs and cats to keep them indoors as much as possible to prevent them from entering or transferring to a destination in contact with other mammals.

Dr Sawat Apiwachaneewong, a doctor in Samut Prakan, says people have been warned to keep a close eye on their pets, especially dogs: “If the animals show symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, confusion, agitation or abnormal behaviour, they should report to the relevant authorities and isolate the animal”.

Those who are bitten or scratched should rinse the wounds with clean water and see a doctor immediately.

If people could vaccinate their animals (subsidised) now, they would not have to keep them indoors (which will not always work, with all the associated risks).

A very good idea of yours Johan, but of course the problem is that probably 3/4 of the dogs don't have an owner who take them to the vet and always roam around.
