A Belgian family narrowly escaped death this weekend when they went to sea in Phuket despite the red flags. Soon they were swept away by a violent undertow in the sea.

“They were in the worst possible place in the sea, past a number of red flags and warnings. They could have all drowned in a matter of minutes," said a lifeguard.

The Belgian family with a three-year-old son got stuck in the sea in the powerful and deadly undertow. Lifeguards on the beach saw the foursome swim for their lives just beyond the safe swimming zone. “A man tried to keep a toddler up as he battled the torrential current. The mother was also almost swept away by the waves until the Thai lifeguards came to free them from the plight.

In the end, the foursome was brought ashore without any injuries. Afterwards, the Belgian family had their picture taken with the 'heroes of the beach'.

I'm sorry, but what a jerk. Did they think those red flags are just a joke? They should be ashamed of themselves. Needlessly putting their own lives and children's lives in danger. They should pay at least the cost of the rescue, preferably with a hefty fine.

      Hi K Peter,

      You expressed it very nicely.
Indeed, these adults have to pay a hefty fine, in addition to an amount for the rescue, because I think that's the only way they won't go into the sea with their big flapping.
My son has also been toilet trained for a while, so also tackle it.
And from me, a portion can go directly to the rescuers.

Endangering not only their own lives, but also those of the rescuers./
      Good education for the toddler.

I think I've already written it once, but when you see people going into the sea with red falcons, I was sitting there vicariously getting a heart attack.
So I will never, even though I can swim well, try to rescue people like that.

Stupid of course. And I totally agree with Khun Peter. And besides, they not only endanger the lives of themselves and their children, but also of the rescuers who have to go into the water because of that stupidity. A hefty fine would be appropriate and pay the costs of course.

Some people do not realize the danger and just pretend that everything is safe
I myself saved a little boy of 6 years old from the sea last year, this boy almost drowned.
This year 2 people drowned here in Jomtien.
Too bad, but many seek out the danger themselves without realizing what can happen next.
Fortunately, it all ended well for these Belgians, I hope they have learned a lesson from this.

Maybe colorblind? Then you see green and red as gray….

It's super stupid what these people did. I hope they read Thailand blog, then they know how people think about them.
However, I want to give an experience or warning here, because as a good swimmer I had to be rescued a few years ago.
At that time I had only gone into the sea to pee. I squatted for a while, because at that spot I was only standing with my knees in the water. Without me realizing it, a wave picked me up and within seconds the current took me away. There was no way I could go back to shore. Fortunately I was able to go to a surfer and hold on to his board. Moments later I was thrown into a large net and taken back to the beach by helicopter.
Shortly before this happened, I saw the same helicopter in action twice from the beach and thought to myself how stupid people can be.
You really don't have to go swimming or go far into the sea to drift off. Perhaps, I must now add, that family fared the same way. Perhaps they didn't realize that the danger was closer than they thought. One moment they were still walking and suddenly the bottom was gone with all the consequences…
