With the images of violence in central Bangkok fresh in the mind, tourists often wonder if it is safe in Bangkok? What is the best travel advice?

This question is of course justified, considering that the state of emergency still applies and bombs go off with some regularity in the center of Bangkok. In recent weeks, 1 has been killed and 13 injured in various bombings.

The well-known blogger Richard Barrow has mapped all the bombings:  Map of bomb explosions

When you look at the map you can see that it is a relatively small area. I think it's good to be especially vigilant there, although it doesn't give any guarantees of course. It is also good to keep following the news.

The warning from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 25 September:

Since the political unrest of May 2010, the situation has changed Thailand generally quiet. However, there remains a risk that political developments could lead to a resurgence of violence. In recent weeks there has been a series of bomb attacks and grenade attacks, in which several people have been injured. Also in places where expats and foreign tourists come, Travelers are advised to take extra care in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani.

Always consult the official authorities for travel advice, such as the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch embassy in Bangkok.

I don't think about it, soon I won't dare to go anywhere and that's exactly what they want. Who and why that group/person commits attacks is still unclear to me. There are also regular attacks in the south.

I think everyone has to decide for themselves if it's safe.

thailand is a safe country, you just have to be careful with thai who are heavily drunk on whisky.they then dare to take out their restrained frustration on foreigners.
otherwise respect the smoking ban, don't look for hard drugs, otherwise you will be extorted.
thai people leave you alone, and will rarely bother anyone. have traveled alone from north to south and feel much safer in thailand than in my own country belgium. of course you should always be careful.

Sometimes I am surprised about the coverage of Thailand, Bangkok. Thailand has been politically stable for years and years, although this emerging democracy sometimes shows some "growth convulsions". The demonstrations of, among other things, the red shirts is an example of this. Despite demonstrations, which only take place in a small part of Bangkok, we were able to carry out our Colors of Bangkok tour daily and carefree. Today it is as it has always been and tourists can move freely through Bangkok.
I wish all visitors a pleasant stay!

    • Yes, totally agree. Yet there are bombings. Not a real danger in my opinion, but bombs don't make tourists happy. That is why the reporting on this, they can form their own picture.
