Bangkok will get a 459-meter observation tower
Bangkok is getting a new tourist attraction: a 459-meter watchtower in Bangkok. The Bangkok observation tower on the Chao Phraya River will cost 4,6 billion baht.
For comparison, the Utrecht Domtoren is 112 meters high and the The Eiffel Tower is 317 meters high without a television antenna.
In December, the cabinet decided that the tower had to be built quickly. Yesterday the cabinet decided that there will be no tendering procedure, the project will be awarded privately to a construction company. According to government spokesman Athisit, the project would otherwise be delayed too much and few construction companies would be interested.
The watchtower will be located near the Chao Phraya River in Khlong San district on land owned by the Treasury Department. The construction costs are financed by loans and donations. The government also helps with a donation (30 years of land rent)
The revenue from entrance fees is estimated at 1,1 billion baht. An entrance ticket costs 750 baht, Thais pay half.

Especially that Thais are going to pay half again raises a lot of question marks.
It would be nice to counteract that the Euromast or the Eiffel Tower would cost double for Thais.
And …… where are the long-promised (min. 10 years) new public buses in Bangkok?….
So that those black soot-vomiting red wrecks will disappear from the streets.
Or are they going to parade them past that beautiful new watchtower?
Will provide nice pictures for the tourists.
NB: with the admonition to tourists not to forget to put on their face masks…
Another billion-dollar project…just as superfluous as the billion-dollar Chinese submarines…And besides, how many are going to lose their lives during the works when you know that even the BTS construction already claimed several deaths.
Of course a lot of money ... but in a way more attractive for the busiest most visited city
in the world in 2016 remember?
This is another reason to book an extra night.
Bangkok….I can't get enough of it with its shops, nightlife and temples.
One night in Bangkok is now the start of a starting spark !!!
After 1 day I now understand the reason why it will be built there. Although publicly financed and with donations, it is on 4 rai government land, which is expensive, and is made available. The reason, in my opinion: as a crowd puller and marking point for the new shopping mall Iconsiam which is under construction, which is within walking distance. Nice present.
Sorry dear editor.
I now see that I was a bit hasty and linked my response to Peet's previous response.
I should have been more careful. There is no direct link to Peet's reaction.
;O) ….. well then I would like to respond to Peet (although chatting is prohibited) …. If you look at what a Thai earns and what a Dutch person earns, then I have no problem with this at all. Especially if people in Thailand are very convinced that they cannot be talked out of it, that everyone in Europe is filthy rich, so be it! ;O)
…. convinced with a d
