A woman (60) from Australia was killed in a robbery on Phuket, Thai media report.

Her companion, who has not yet been identified, was seriously injured in the robbery.

The two tourists walked back from a restaurant to their hotels, Katathani Phuket Beach Resort, when they were followed by two young men on a motorcycle.

One of the men tried to steal the 60-year-old woman's handbag, but she resisted fiercely. The man pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim and her companion. The robbers then fled, but were caught on surveillance cameras.

The two Australian tourists arrived on Wednesday Thailand and were planning to stay on Phuket for a month. The hotel staff said they were well-known guests who came to Phuket every year.

Of course a terrible story and I hope everyone is spared this…

However, I wonder if I would “resist”.

Probably not, I would probably be paralyzed with fear but even if not I would 'give' the robbers what they want. To prevent worse.

Possibly I would flee Thailand completely traumatized and disillusioned the next day, never to return. (Assuming I survive the robbery.)

    Paradise wouldn't be paradise anymore.

I really don't need such an incident to realize that Thailand is not paradise, by the way, paradise does not exist anywhere only as a cog in the human mind. Very sorry for these people and I think it's very bad and I want to express my condolences to the families of the victims.

That's what I've always intended, Cees, don't resist and just hand over your money/stuff…..until it happens to you and then, in my case, the human reaction turns out to be something else and I too got quite a few blows because of it .
I am realistic enough that these are incidents and not a reason to leave Thailand (by the way, my incident was not in Thailand but it is about the reaction), I still think Thailand is safe enough and one of the reasons for this is that the punishment here is decent and the perpetrators go to jail for a longer period of time.
I think Hans-ajax's reaction is the right one, be sensible and don't take too much money with you, store expensive jewelry in a safe, don't tie the cat to the bacon.

And everyone keeps shouting how safe Thailand is.
It is unbelievable how many tourists have been "killed" in recent years
    in Thailand, for various reasons.
But they are so sweet when they smile 🙂

    • That happens everywhere. This week the Dominican Republic was in the news. Robberies, murder and kidnapping of tourists is almost daily practice there.
Almost every week two or three tourists drown in Thailand (and other holiday countries) you don't hear about that…

      • Sir Charles says up

Well, if Loe had said something similar about the Dominican Republic on a blog or forum dedicated to that country, he would most likely have had the same reaction from the editors of 'that happens everywhere' and reference was made to Thailand, for example.

        • Yes, that could be good. So…?

          • Sir Charles says up

That soon the country where the loved one comes from is often defended. Funny and innocent but still remarkable. 🙂

It is of course completely true that such horrible practices also take place in other countries, but that does not mean that it is just talked about or downplayed, but in my circle of acquaintances, when Thailand is negatively in the news, it is quickly 'excused' and people say 'yes'. but that happens everywhere, not just in Thailand' or things like that.

Incidentally, I myself often have the tendency to do it and I am sometimes 'guilty' of it, because I love my girlfriend very much and, by extension, the country of Thailand, nothing human is strange to me.

Once again there is nothing wrong with that, dear Peter, in a pleasant way, finds it remarkable no more than that.
For example, I now have a colleague who got to know a woman from Ukraine, that country which is now so topical because of the European Championship 2012, you guessed it as soon as a negative aspect is highlighted about that country, he quickly answers that defensively slightly irritated with 'that also happens in other countries' often preceded by the words 'yes, but'.

            • Hello Sir Charles, I think your assumption is wrong. I am not defending Thailand, on the contrary. I posted the article and otherwise I wouldn't, it seems to me. My lover is from Thailand, but that doesn't mean I'm an idol of Thailand. In fact, I wouldn't even want to live there. Thailand is a special country but certainly not better than so many other countries or my home country. If you look at human rights, freedom of expression, corruption, rights of foreigners, etc. Thailand is still a developing country in my opinion. As soon as I am in Thailand, I have the feeling that I have to give up rights that I have built up in the Netherlands. Undesirable for me. But that aside.

What strikes me most is that the death of a tourist evokes many violent reactions. Most tourists die almost daily by drowning. I don't hear about that. Strange in my eyes.
I closely follow the news from Thailand, the number of crimes involving violence against tourists is not too bad, especially when you consider that 15 million tourists come to Thailand every year. This Australian woman has had a lot of bad luck. Nevertheless, it is terrible and I do not want to downplay the incident, but the reactions are sometimes a bit exaggerated.

              • Sir Charles says up

Clear and clear Peter and with your opinion and view of Thailand I completely agree with you.

To be honest, I just couldn't resist responding to your answer to Loe since '(yes, but) that happens everywhere' is often the standard answer of many men who have fallen in love with a Thai beauty and by extension with Thailand, therefore often the ratio can no longer be distinguished.

My sincere apologies for misinterpreting it.

                • Apologies are not necessary, I'd be happy to explain 😉

            • In addition, a Dutch tourist was also murdered in Tanzania on Wednesday: http://nos.nl/artikel/387064-nlse-toerist-vermoord-in-tanzania.html

Something like this can happen anywhere in the world, unfortunately…

Whenever I go somewhere with my wife, I make sure that all the valuable things like purse, passport, etc. are not kept in her handbag but on my body, they will really have to lift me out of there first And it won't be easy I assure you. However, when I tell my wife about the why, I am often not really understood, if I read your story now, I think I will be proved right afterwards, don't I?. Not that a possible stabbing wouldn't have happened, with this fateful outcome unfortunately, this aside, but perhaps if that hadn't been the case, they wouldn't have lost their various valuables as mentioned. Something to think about, it happens regularly in Thailand this kind of thing. And as a well-known Dutch proverb says, “When the calf is drowned, the cow is sad.” Wise advice, therefore, and I would say take advantage of it.
    Sincerely
    Hans-ajax

I used to be reminded to hand over my money (Bangkok) also the same scenario, threatened with a knife.
Can you say that the robbers ran off with their tails between their legs.
Cees, those who are afraid will also be beaten, I will not let anyone take my money.

  5. RIEKIE says up

My condolences go out to the bereaved families.
You don't go on vacation for this, to get robbed and killed. Very sad to read.

  6. marijke says up

This is certainly deeply sad, also my condolences for the bereaved. It will happen to you your parents go away for a month and you will never see them again. I also always felt safe on the streets in Thailand, but that is not the case. Not only in the Netherlands you will be robbed with a scooter. From now on I will also carry my wallet on my body and no longer a shoulder bag. Thanks for the tip. But it still remains a wonderful holiday country. A few years ago we visited my brother-in-law in Australia. After a day in Sydney, he asked where his Julie had all been, yes there and there, including Kings Cross, the red light district of Sydney. you can be robbed or something like that. I say yes in amsterdamm too. You see it can happen anywhere.

  7. BramSiam says up

Thailand is not paradise. You will only get there in the afterlife if you adhere to the right faith. Thailand is relatively safe with by far the greatest risk of traffic accidents. Strange is the reaction of someone who still thinks Thailand is a paradise if it happens to someone else, but no longer if it happens to him. Coincidence then apparently determines whether Thailand is a paradise.
If everyone handed over their stuff right away, robbing would become even more popular.

  8. Piet says up

Knowing the thai, those perpetrators will be arrested within 3 days. The punishment will not be mild I think and they will be in the newspaper with the photo and all.
    I'm waiting.

    • Siamese says up

The real perpetrators or just random others? If it takes too long, they will play it to the cops so that the perpetrators are supposedly caught to appease public opinion. You shouldn't think that they always catch the real perpetrators here, they tell most people what they want.

    • R. Tersteeg says up

The punishment will certainly not be mild, and as you state that they will be caught with 3 days, because mutually also applies (a traitor does not sleep) I hope so!
Because we all know that these guys are probably going to go into the Bankwang whining.
It's horrible, but again people please be careful!!
For example, if you are in places where there are many tourists, you often see those brats checking people completely to see where they are going, especially if they are alone, keep an eye on this and never respond to reactions from hey you or sire you want Malbollo, I never trust the moped taxi either.
The terrible what these people have to go through now who have lost their loved ones, my sympathy with this one.

  9. Lieven says up

Don't get me wrong I think this happened horribly wherever it may happen but I wonder if such reports are necessary on a site that is actually intended to promote Thailand. All over the world these facts happen where you can consult the online newspapers.

moderator: Thailandblog is not intended to promote Thailand. There are other sites for that. And Lieven, please use a little more punctuation next time.

    • Siamese says up

Well I think it's very good of Thailandblog that they show up with such coverage, so we know what's going on here and what we have to be wary of. By the way, there was another incident in Phuket yesterday, this time involving a young Australian kickboxer, probably because he changed clubs as champion or because he won too many fights and certain malified people lost too much money in gambling. Thailand is a beautiful country, but certain places are best not to look for here, including Phuket, I think, almost only hear and read negative things about this place.

    'Avoid Phuket?
    Not going to Thailand anymore?
In a country where it seemed safe, always be on your guard/
    Staying in after sunset?
    Always take a taxi?
Never defend yourself, just hand over your money to whoever asks?
Draw a conclusion: Tjamuk has no opinion?

Moderator: please respond to the content of the article and not to other rulers. Otherwise we will get all sorts of 'off-topic' discussions.

Fortunately, I managed to reach someone with my views on this article, especially Marijke, who has understood it all, so she benefits from it.
Thai people, on the other hand, are quite stubborn. Chapo Mary.

Thank you Hans I will definitely take your tip to heart. I never even thought about it. But it's still wonderful to be in Thailand, even if it's just for the weather. haha . Better than here.
