In Songkhla (southern Thailand), 20 people have already been injured by the tail jellyfish with the name 'Portuguese man-of-war'. Formally, the animal is not a jellyfish but a collection of very poisonous polyps.

The 23 unfortunate victims who came into contact with the jellyfish had to go to the hospital because the poison causes a lot of pain, possibly fever, shock and breathing problems. There are also deaths because swimmers become entangled in the tentacles, paralyzed and drown. People who are allergic to the poison can experience anaphylactic shock that is also life-threatening.

A doctor says that an exceptional number of Portuguese warships have been spotted this season and that therefore swimming at the beach of Samila is not allowed for the time being.

For people who do not know: In calm seas, the Portuguese man-of-war is easy to recognize because the floating body protrudes approximately 20 cm above the water, and indeed has the shape of a caravel. However, the tentacles can reach 20 meters, so at the slightest danger: out of the water!!
