The official population of Thailand in 2022 will be over 66 million people. Bangkok is the most populous city in the country with 5,5 million inhabitants.

According to the Ministry of Interior, 66,09 million people live in Thailand, of which 65,1 million are Thai citizens and about 984.000 are non-Thai citizens. This information was published by the Center Registration Bureau.

Of the total Thai population, 33,3 million are women and 31,7 million are men. Among non-Thai are about 515.600 men and 468.000 women. The capital Bangkok remains the most densely populated with almost 5,5 million registered inhabitants.

This census is typically used by various organizations to formulate plans and implement policies. For example, this new population figure may lead to changes in the number of available members of parliament. As many as 43 provinces, including Bangkok, could potentially nominate 1-3 more parliamentary seats in the upcoming general election, though the decision ultimately rests with the Election Commission.

5 responses to “Thailand has 66 million inhabitants”

  1. John Hoekstra says up

Registered residents, there are 5,5 million people living in Bangkok with unregistered residents, don't you get to 12 million inhabitants sooner?

    • Chris says up

I think you are right John.
Many Thai citizens, who have moved to the capital for work, are still registered (the well-known blue house book) in their place of birth.
You can see this best in elections where there is an obligation to vote. Then many Thais travel back 'home'. Not voting has consequences, especially if you want a government job.

Don't quite get it as there are 3 to 4 million foreigners working and living from surrounding countries. In various overviews of UN and others you come across numbers from now above 70 million, so there is a gap of 4 million somewhere. Must be the foreigners from the surrounding countries who also live in Thailand and are forgotten, or something else is wrong because don't think this was a real census.

    • Peter (editor) says up

No definitely not. It also states that they are officially registered residents of Bangkok. But there are a lot of unregistered Thai people living in Bangkok and also migrant workers from neighboring countries. The actual population of Bangkok is approaching 10 million and I have even heard estimates of 14 million.

By the way, read in PBS that the nearly 1 million non-Thai are awaiting their Thai nationality, then these are undoubtedly those who live in the border areas and who are not yet registered official Thais. The real foreigners who also live in Thailand, expats and those from surrounding countries, I suspect have been left out of the counts.
