News from Thailand – Thursday, March 26, 2015

The Nation opens with the report that the governor of Bangkok, Sukhumbhand Paribatra, has had a blow from Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on the chaos caused by flooding in Bangkok after heavy rainfall. Prayut had already warned of the storm that was coming. Sukhumbhand admits that the city underestimated the flooding, but defended itself by noting that there was a lot of rain. According to the critic, insufficient precautions have been taken, such as pumping out sewers. On social media, many Bangkokians reacted with annoyance and shared photos of a flooded supermarket: http://goo.gl/8Yj4O0

Bangkok Post opens with a message about 21 Thai fishermen being brought back from Ambon in Indonesia. The men fled to the island after being forced to work in inhumane conditions on Thai fishing boats. Since October last year, 146 fishermen have already been returned to Thailand: http://goo.gl/aqCF0X

– Prayut Chan-o-cha said today that he is considering lifting the state of emergency and reversing certain laws that give him “absolute power”. The cabinet met today in Hua Hin: http://goo.gl/h9qega

– It will remain bad weather in parts of Thailand for at least two days. Especially the North and the central part of Thailand, including Bangkok, will have to deal with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall: http://goo.gl/c1kJ49

– The storm on Wednesday evening in Bangkok not only caused flooding, air traffic also suffered a lot. At least 108 flights were affected and were diverted or delayed. Some planes had to stay in the air for an extra 25 minutes before they could land: http://goo.gl/RYhxTy

  1. support says up

Yes, if it is not formally a rainy season then you do nothing about the PREVENTIVE cleaning of your sewerage system, right? You will only do that when the rainy season starts. And now, damn it, it's suddenly going to rain hard, while it's not a rain season. That sucks. I am afraid that the term PREVENTIVE will remain a concept that will not catch on with Thais.
