The Dutch seed breeder Simon Groot from Enkhuizen is this year's winner of the prestigious World Food Prize. This was announced by the US State Department.

He receives this important food prize for developing seeds for vegetables that are much more resistant to diseases than normal seeds. They also grow faster, so that more and faster can be harvested.

Poor farmers in Asia in particular benefit from these seeds. Previously, seeds of moderate to poor quality were used, which led to poor harvests, poverty and malnutrition. The distribution of Simon Groot's seeds in countries such as Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia improved the lives of farmers and consumers benefited from better access to nutritious vegetables, according to the jury report.

Simon Groot is very happy with the award that recognizes the help to millions of small farmers. Small-scale vegetable farming is a great way to generate income and employment in rural areas.

The World Food Prize was established in 1986 by Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug. He wanted to give recognition to scientists and others who have committed themselves to the quality and availability of food.

In addition to the appreciation and recognition, Simon Groot will also receive a cash award of USD 250.000.
