Dutch music, especially dance music by well-known DJs, is doing well in Asia. China in particular, but also Japan, Indonesia and Thailand embrace pop music from the Netherlands. Tiesto has already performed several times in Bangkok and Pattaya, but Hardwell, Martin Garrix and Afrojack have also thrilled the mostly Thai dance enthusiasts. Thai fans of more quiet music could also enjoy our André Rieu who gave a performance in Bangkok.

In Europe, the number of performances in Spain has grown considerably. The countries with the most performances based on the 50 most performing artists are the US, Spain, Germany, England and newcomer China.

The export value that Dutch pop music adds to the Dutch economy was more than €2017 million in 201; an increase of 0,26% compared to 2016. More than 75,6% is accounted for by dance music. This is evident from the annual survey by Perfect & More, which has been mapping the export value of Dutch pop music on behalf of Buma Cultuur since 2004.

The share of dance music (performances) has grown from 2009% since 33 to over 71% in 2017. Tiësto, Yellow Claw, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix, Dash Berlin, R3Hab, Afrojack, Sam Feldt, Bassjackers, W&W, Quintino, Laidback Luke, Hardwell, Don Diablo, Headhunterz, Nicky Romero, Joris Voorn, Brennan Heart, Chuckie and Fedde Le Grand are DJs who are among the 20 most performing artists. New Dutch DJ talent such as San Holo, Joey Daniel and Unders also score internationally.

Of the 50 most performing acts abroad, which together account for 28% of the total number of performances outside the Netherlands, only ten are not from the dance scene. Tiësto leads the list of most appearances, followed by Yellow Claw, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix and Dash Berlin. Non-dance related acts that were successful with performances abroad in 2017 are Epica, André Rieu, My Baby and Tim Vantol.

Looking at individual tracks that have been very successful abroad, these are mainly 'Waves' by Mr. Probz, 'Reality' by Lost Frequencies/Felix De Laet (by the participation of Janieck Devy and Radboud Miedema), 'Animals' by Martin Garrix, 'Firestone' by Kygo and 'Policeman' (Eva Simons/Sidney Samson.

Classics such as 'Venus' by Shocking Blue (Robbie van Leeuwen), 'Radar Love' by Golden Earring, 'You' by Ten Sharp and 'In 't Kleine Café Aan De Haven' by Pierre Kartner continue to be successful.

I regularly ask my students (20-24 years old, the target group for many a concert and many also go) but except for a few, nobody has any idea where the artists come from.
