De Volkskrant is looking for a Southeast Asia correspondent who works from a location to be determined in consultation. Candidates have a good pen, an investigative eye and a broad interest, including for online reporting.

Southeast Asia is currently showing its best and worst side. In Myanmar, the army staged a coup, demonstrators were shot dead. It fits well with the trend in the region: an increase in authoritarian rule and violation of human rights. At the same time, many countries in this region have managed to contain the corona virus.

We are looking for a correspondent who can shed light on these different sides through news, reports, analyzes and interviews. Who writes about the democratization protests in Thailand just as easily as about the popularity of basketball in the Philippines. Who, now that traveling in Asia is practically impossible due to corona, knows how to locate the right people via telephone and video calls, but who will set off himself as soon as possible.

In addition to the eleven countries of Southeast Asia, the correspondent also includes Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. The correspondent searches in all these countries for stories that the Volkskrant reader should not miss.

We are looking for someone who, in addition to political, economic and social stories, also has an eye for art, sports and religion. Experience in writing journalism and mastery of all genres are required.

This is a freelance correspondent.

For further information, please contact Marjolein van de Water, Head of Foreign Affairs ([email protected]). Applications can be submitted until March 12 to deputy editor-in-chief Annieke Kranenberg ([email protected]).
