Nightlife in Bangkok: Gay Guide Silom (Video)
Thailand and the capital Bangkok are not only great destinations for straight people, but certainly also for gays.
If you are looking for 'Gay friendly' nightlife, the Silom Intersection is a great choice. You will find plenty in the vicinity of this intersection entertainment venues for gays. And everything within walking distance.
For example, start at Silom Soi 2 and 2/1. A must there is the Diamond Bar, where you can order good Italian and Thai dishes and there is also an excellent wine list.
The Soi 2 Bar is home to the famous DJ Station. You can party there until the small hours. Soi 4 is the place to be for the famous Telephone pub, a gay pub with karaoke. If you walk further up the street, you will pass the mysterious and seductive Stanger Bar: three floors with a terrace. Great to stop for a delicious cocktail.
Video going out in Bangkok: Gay nightclub in Bangkok
Watch the video here:
Last week I spent the night with my wife in a hotel on the Sathon Toad, near the German embassy, where I had to go the next morning. This runs parallel to the Silom Road and we could walk to Sala Daeng, or Pat Pong. When I was still working as a steward, I used to come there more often and because we had nothing better to do, we walked through the neighborhood.
I know that two blocks away is such a gay paradise and now even on a corner of Simon Road a place where the bad boys were waiting. On the other side of Pat Pong, to the left we ended up in such a street again. I was a bit shocked by this concentration of gay bars around Pat Pong. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with anyone's sexual preference, but those staring eyes made me feel unwell.
I was happy to get out of there quickly. The one who had the most fun was my wife…
As I wrote, I used to be in Pat Pong because of the watches and fake bags, but this big gay scene? Was that also the case before? I mean, over ten years ago?
Dear Sjaak, yes this neighborhood has always been a “Gay” neighborhood, at least since 1980 when I first came to Bangkok. It may have been longer, but I can't tell you about that. In Soi 2 you had “Harry's Bar” with a nice cabaret show every evening. With caisaro above
Error, wrong key pressed.
Up there you had “Cisaro” a club with money boys. In Soi 4 the then renowned “Rome Club” the predecessor of what is now DJ Station. At the time, the neighborhood was also full of small bars in the many small soi's where it was pleasant to stay. Go-Go bars were already located at the beginning (or end if you like) of Suriwongse Road. This street has developed into what is now called Soi Starlight.
Perhaps it was all a bit less exuberant outwardly at the time. The Gay scene was then still a close-knit and quite closed community. Have wonderful memories of the 80s until the turn of the century, after which much has changed and has become more open.
Regards, Paul Schiphol
Well, so you see….I learned something again…
Yes, it was always there. Perhaps a little less exuberant, less open and less on the street, but it was always there. And especially the "naughty street" when you cross Suriwing Street, and where everything in the gay sex field is for sale and can be admired… A good place for enthusiasts!
