Home » Reader question » Reader question: Is heavy Van Nelle rolling tobacco available in Thailand?
Dear readers,
At the end of June 2014, my wife and I are going to Thailand for 4 weeks.
I always read that you can buy practically anything in Thailand. I recognize that it is a bad habit, but as an avid smoker of heavy Van Nelle shag I wonder if I should take 3 cartons in my luggage or if I can get this (preferably cheap and easy) in Thailand?
Anyone have an idea and if so where?
Thank you very much for your comment and regards,
Anne
last summer i was able to buy from nelle heavy rolling tobacco at a few different shops in hua hin.
Bought 1 pack to try but was quite expensive and didn't sell that much so very dry.
From now on I will take with me from Schiphol, but put a bag from Sea Buy Fly in your suitcase because you are not allowed to take 3 slippers with you. (smoke them and have a nice holiday)
In Udon Thani there is a shop on the corner of Thanon Phosi and Thanon Si Sattha and there they sell/sell not only liquor but also smoking products including pipes, pipe tobacco, NL cigars and NL rolling tobacco. But HEAVY? I do not know that anymore. And don't forget the rolling papers; what are they baking here….
A long time ago I bought that in Bangkok on the corner of Sukhumwit and soi 4 (next to a gas station) in a big khaa yaa. I don't know if it's still there.
What Eric says is correct. Small addition: buy rolling papers from the Gizeh brand. Available in 4 thicknesses. The thinnest is even thinner than Rizla blue. Below is the location.
Chinese entrepreneurs often see this gap in the market.
https://www.google.com/maps/place/17%C2%B024'22.7%22N+102%C2%B047'24.9%22E/@17.406306,102.790265,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0
Don't worry Heavy van Nelle export is available in every tourist place, it is sold in the better supermarkets and it is packaged including Rizzla + orange.
The price is currently even slightly below the Dutch price.
I was in Korat last December and January, but unfortunately they didn't have it there anymore so I had them come to Korat by an acquaintance from Pattaya with the Air bus, which works perfectly.
Regards, Ben Korat
Don't know where you're staying, but if this is Pattaya, there's plenty of heavy rolling tobacco available there.
Hello Anne,
I don't know if this is one of your destinations…but in Jomtien there is a Chinese store that sells Drum..Samson and van Nelle. It is right in front of the Jomtien Plaza Condotel entrance
Always bring your own favorite rolling papers and have fun in Thailand.
Greetings, Joe
Heavy van nelle is also for sale in various places on Koh Samui.
Hi Anne,
I've mainly been in tourist areas and there you can just buy heavy rolling tobacco. Experience tells me that Schiphol is the cheapest, but do it in hand luggage and otherwise give your wife a portion. You may officially only take 1 carton of 5 packs (250 grams in total). When they see you with a see buy fly bag you are checked more often, friends of mine have boarded the ship for a few hundred euros.
How interesting!
Smoke heavy filter cigarettes, French Gitanes. If they are not available, for example at Schiphol duty free, then take a carton of classic Gauloises Caporal there. Also always a 10-pack of heavy Van Nelle and rolling papers on my buddy's boarding pass.
When all that has been smoked in Thailand, an acquaintance sends cigarettes by mail from Vientiane (VTE), Laos to my address in Thailand. The brand name of those cigarettes is 'Savannakhet', named after – and produced in – the region of the same name in Laos. Made with heavy black tobacco. They happen to be a lot cheaper than the Thai cigarettes, which, by the way, do not have a heavy kind on offer.
Furthermore, in VTE, the French Gitanes and Gauloises are sometimes available tax-free at Pimphone Supermarket, at Khob Chai Due bar-restaurant in the center. Have them sent to you or bring them with you from a trip. At Pimphone they have more import products and next time definitely look out for Heavy Van Nelle.
.
But now another question; lately when staying in Belgium, I roll filter cigarettes myself. The regular cigarettes are getting too expensive for me; 6,20 € for 20 cigarettes. Get 50 from a pack of rolling tobacco of the same price. Then also buy Heavy Van Nelle, Ajja 17 blue or Gauloises Caporal rolling tobacco.
Got that classic blue Rizla cigarette pusher/roller or what do you call it, and filter tubes.
Now ask me the question, can that be found in Thailand? Those filter sleeves? Googled me once - almost - crazy, in vain.
Follow here on the blog where the Heavy Van Nelle's can be found, because if I'm without a smother, enjoy a rolled one with the orange rolling papers. Just not that handy.
Heavy van Nelle can also be found in Chiang Mai. Recently, filter sleeves were also sold on the market here. A tent of a Thai lady with a Dutch husband.
Thanks for the tip about filter sleeves!
Which market are you referring to exactly? Be sure to look there, if he has cigarette tubes he will certainly know where to obtain the tobacco.
Believe that this Dutch man has ever responded to Thailandblog in another matter. Will ponder.
In Chaa-am it is for sale at the Okay supermarket.
These have several Dutch products such as herring and croquette frikadel and bamiballen
In Hua hin at the Kodak shop opposite the Beach hotel it is a bit more expensive.
Doesn't matter, better if not for sale.
Personally I am a cigar smoker. Much more expensive in Thailand than in Belgium but cheaper in Cambodia. There is also a lot of choice in Cambodia, even the erection pills are sold there in the supermarket.
Dear people,
Thanks for the excellent tips. I'm a little less worried now. The route is Bangkok, Hua Hin, Surat Thani, Khao Sok, Koh Samui, Koh Phagnan, Koh Tao, Chumphon, Bangkok. It seems to me that my maximum allowed 2 x 250 grams (woman (non-smoker) also smuggles along, of course) has passed through Koh Samui around the beginning and if I read it that way it is available there. Keep me recommended for addresses there.
Yours faithfully,
Anne
ps if anyone has any other great travel tip for the indicated route, I highly recommend it.
Hi Anne,
Thank you also for sharing your question, other smokers / bloggers also benefit from the tips.
Wish you a pleasant stay! You will come back for sure.
By the way, keep the following in mind when you roll a cigarette.
Thai people who see this for the first time can be quite surprised. On the other hand, there are Thai people who know it, and they either know that you are from the Netherlands, or they think that you like listening to Bob Marley. You better leave the latter for what it is, lol!
Davis.
No thanks Davis.
Just came back from Egypt (southern Egypt has no negative travel advice) where people immediately think you're on the hash if you roll a shaggy. Can also note that during the flight I have an electronic cigarette in my breast pocket. Can't resist taking nicotine in all those locked up hours. Even though not all airlines allow this, I do suck at it every now and then, especially when people aren't looking. Have never had any problems. Apparently I haven't been spotted lurking yet.
Stopped for a few months, but smoked Heavy v Nelle for about fifty years. came to Thailand for many years ( Now I have been living here for 6 years ) and could buy my brand everywhere, only the export, but even slightly cheaper than in Holland,
Usually packed with red Rizla, but also available separately, and in Pattaya, I bought a carton, then I got the rolling paper and three lighters for free/
But as Ben Korat says, previously also available in The Mall, but not anymore for a few months, and therefore decided to stop, haha difficult, but you are getting used to it.
Is it no longer selling good for something?
