Dear readers,

My son is 16 years old and flying alone to Thailand. He is picked up by his 20 year old sister. They travel to Malaysia after 1 day. Does he need additional documents or not?

I like to hear it.

Sincerely,

Saskia

Wouldn't it be more convenient, Saskia, to approach the relevant airline for this. I am also thinking of last week's discussion about credit card payment, for example, and there are more restrictions, especially for minors. Good luck.

What I know from my own experience is that he must have a document with the signature of both parents who give permission for the trip (municipal service - civil affairs).
A copy of the birth register is also sometimes requested. Can be obtained after payment at the municipality where he was registered after birth.

At least a statement from the parents that they want to let him go alone - chances are he won't even get a boarding pass otherwise. He's not 18 yet, so he's not an adult. Many airlines (be complete and think before you ask) want to give it in insured arrival with someone who has registered in advance.
For the rest, vwb TH and MY-may well be that even more rules apply there, although that will be less for trip 2 because big sister is there.

With this filled in and no problem at the Dutch border, use the English language so that you can also show in Thailand.

This form is for someone traveling abroad with a minor over whom they do not have custody. The underage boy in question travels alone from the Netherlands, so this is of no use when traveling out of the Netherlands.

The rules differ per airline and per country.
In this case you are dealing with three countries, namely the Netherlands, Thailand and Malaysia, and one or more (this is not apparent from the question) airlines.
The only advice I can give you is to contact the embassies of the countries concerned and the airlines involved.

I have the same idea with my 2 sons aged 10 and 14. They only return from BKK to BXL.
Contacted the airline (Thai Air). Have a letter filled in with the permission of one of the parents and the name of the person who will pick them up. Guidance requested. This costs 50 euros for both, but no promotion possible on children's tickets. In this way they can only return with peace of mind. They are your children!
