Why is a Thai baby always ugly?

Dear readers,

When a baby is born, my Thai wife always says he/she is ugly. I thought that was weird and wanted her to stop. But she says that Thai people do that because otherwise they are afraid that the baby will be stolen by a ghost or something. So it has to do with superstition.

Is that right? Have you ever heard of that?

Greetings from a loyal reader,

Ben

That's what I've been told. Never say a baby is beautiful because that angers the spirits. Now some Thais are super superstitious and others are not so this will not apply everywhere. Incidentally, this superstition is present in all classes of the population, I had expected to find it only among the less educated, but that is not correct, highly educated Thais can also be very superstitious.

The superstition of spirits, house spirits, earth spirits, etc., is very large in Thailand, so that most of them come across different things every time.
The Ugly Baby, called that on purpose, is for the purpose of ignoring spirits.
When we make a picnic somewhere in nature with the Family, there is often a snack and a drink a little further away, so that any earth spirit can also stay in a good mood.
If we go for a walk somewhere in nature, and I suddenly get pressure on my bladder, I always have to promise my wife that I will apologize to the earth spirits.
The most famous are the small house altars that you see in front of every house in Thailand.
How many ghosts there are, and what they are used for everywhere, could almost tell an endless story here.555

Yes, it has to do with superstition.
Your Thai wife believes what most Thai people think about this.

It is a matter of respect and acceptance.

Nicknames are used/given for the same reason!

For example, baby clothes or baby toys are never purchased before birth. Furnishing a baby's room before birth is also out of the question. Even naming the baby before birth spells doom for the baby. As a result, the name of the child cannot be spoken, let alone discussed before birth.

    Very different from Western culture
